LG.Philips announces 52 and 84-inch multi-touch displays, double-sided LCD, and more

December 31st, 2007

LG.Philips ain’t screwing around this CES, bringing the pain on rival Sharp with five interesting new panels. Check it out:

  • 52-inch multi-touch LCD - full 1080p, two touch detection
  • 84-inch multi-touch LCD - 2 x 4 array of 42-inch panels, totaling full 1080p resolution, 500cd/m2 brightness
  • 47-inch triple-view LCD - full 1080p, 250cd/m2 brightness, three separate images (much like Sharp’s triple view), photo after the break
  • 47-inch double sided LCD - 70mm thickness, 500cd/m2 brightness, displays images on both sides
  • 42-inch transflective LCD - the 1,500cd/m2 brightness is nice, but damn that’s large for a transflective display.

Kind of goes without saying, but these aren’t TV sets ready for sale or anything — these are panels produced for OEMs to build into their gear, more than likely industrial and commercial type getups. Still, hot.

Marantz announces VP-11S2 1080p DLP projector

December 30th, 2007

Marantz is jumping back into the display pool for 2008, announcing the new VP-11S2 model 1080p DLP projector. Compared to last year’s VP-11S1H, this model adds a second HDMI 1.3 input, and Texas Instrument’s DarkChip4 chipset, boosting it up to 800 lumens of brightness and a 12,000:1 contrast ratio. No price was released, but considering the previous models hover in the $15,000 price range, we expect no less quality — or cost — from this one either.

Samsung singing the organic tube

December 29th, 2007

Samsung a leading Korean electronics giant has announced the launch of a 31-inch ultra-thin organic screen, Flat screen makers are increasingly looking at active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) as a growth driver because they produce brighter images and use less power. Samsung SDI officials declined to say when the company’s 31-inch OLED screen would be mass-produced, saying the decision depended on TV set makers’ plans. Samsung SDI is also planning to mass-produce 14-inch screens in 2008, Yoo Eui-jin, head of Samsung SDI’s AM-OLED team, said at a press conference introducing the display. Although Yoo declined to name the companies that would use the AM-OLED screens, he said a number of companies had expressed interest. Samsung SDI said its 31-inch module is only 4.3 mm thick, or one-tenth of a typical liquid crystal display panel, and consumed less than half the electricity needed for a 32-inch LCD screen. Samsung SDI also said the lifespan of its display was 35,000 hours, the best performance among existing AM-OLEDs. While small AM-OLED displays are already in use on premium mobile phones and media players, large-sized models are particularly difficult and costly to make. Shipments of Sony’s 11-inch OLED TVs have been limited to 2,000 units per month. Earlier this month, Japan’s Toshiba Corp said it had shelved plans to sell AM-OLED TVs in 2009-10 because of the cost of mass production.

Sony VPL-VW40 Projector Brings Sony 1080p Down to Sub $3K

December 28th, 2007

Sony’s putting some great tech into its 1080p VPL-VW40 projector, but the big story here is the price: One penny under $3000 takes it home. Sony just couldn’t sit still while Epson and Panasonic break the $3000 barrier for erstwhile crazy-expensive 1080p projectors, with both competitors already cranking out their second iterations packed with 1080p-ness. So here’s Sony’s reply, this Bravia SXRD projector with a 15,000:1 contrast ratio. There’s three micro-display panels cranking out the high-rez in full 12-bit color, using liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) technology instead of those tiny mirrors in DLP projectors. And we especially like the 22dB spec of that ultraquiet fan on board. Sony says this mutha will be available on January 31st.

Panasonic readying 150-inch plasma HDTV

December 27th, 2007

image
image
Panasonic is developing a plasma set it will claim as the world’s largest TV barring a surprise from rivals, says a claim in Japan’s Daily Yomiuri. The paper points to anonymous sources which say the set will measure 150 inches diagonally, beating out screens such as JVC’s 110-inch rear projector for the title of the largest home TV regardless of class. The size of the screen alone will be large enough to stand taller than an adult, the newspaper claims.

Other specifications are unknown for the set, though it should reach a minimum 1080p resolution and may represent the grafting together of four smaller sets to reach its anticipated dimensions. The story claims a public debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month but hints that production models are unlikely to reach buyers until 2009. Panasonic recently offered a 103-inch plasma set but has since discontinued it, though whether scarcity of parts or low demand resulted in the change is unclear.
