Sony BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 Blu-ray players

February 27th, 2008

Sony_Blu-ray_Players_1.jpg

Sony has announced two new Blu-ray players that will be capable of accessing advanced interactive features such as BonusView and BD-Live. The BDP-S350 will feature an Ethernet port, USB port for connecting external storage and “BonusView” picture-in-picture capability. With the BD-Live firmware update and access to Internet-based interactive content features will be easy. The BDP-S550 ships with a 1GB storage device (which probably means that has a flash-based Micro Vault) and will be BD-Live capable right out of the box. But the difference between the two models is that the S550 can decode DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and Master Audio, and has 7.1-channel analog outputs (presumably 5.1 on the S350). Both the players will support 1080/60p and 24p video and can decode Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus. The $400 Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player is slated for a summer release, while the $500 S550 won’t be here until fall.

Toshiba REGZA 40″ Super Narrow Bezel 1080p LCD HDTV Package w/ $100 Rebate

February 26th, 2008

The latest addition to the Toshiba HDTV lineup is the Regza Super Narrow bezel LCD TV, which we were already able to check out momentarily at this year’s CEDIA. While we love to talk about how great a TV looks, to most, picture quality is not the most important aspect when choosing a new set. Some people are very attached to their furniture, so the maximum width of the TV can be more important than anything else. After all, who doesn’t want to get the biggest HDTV they can fit in that nice cherry armoire; for these people, Toshiba’s latest HDTV is just what they are looking for. But even if you aren’t trying to buy a TV that fits your existing furniture, there is something pleasantly enigmatic about a TV that almost appears to be a screen floating on a wall — albeit a few inches from it.

The Super Thin Bezel Regza isn’t super thin in every category though, in fact it’s the opposite from front to back, but most won’t ever notice unless they’re going for the up against the wall look.

Out of the box, the stand isn’t installed, but it’s easy enough to use the supplied Allen key to fasten it on to the bottom. The remote is sufficient enough, but then again, maybe we’re just used to the el cheapo remotes that come with the HD DVD players these days. Frankly, the unit is nice and wide and the buttons are well placed, and while we would’ve preferred if it were backlit, we realize you can’t have everything … especially for this kind of price!

Sony has announced its new range of DAV-DZ BRAVIA Theatre systems, each unsurprisingly styled to match the look and feel of the latest BRAVIA TVs.
To increase the appeal of a Sony-branded home cinema set-up, the new systems use BRAVIA Sync, an enhanced version of BRAVIA Theatre Sync, to give greater control of the overall system using a single remote control.
In addition, by using Sony’s digital media port, the DAV-DZ systems can also connect your portable and wireless music devices such as mobile phones, WALKMAN and other MP3 players, Bluetooth devices and home Wi-Fi networks.
Sony’s Digital Cinema Auto-Calibration claims to ensure a fast, simple and automatic multi channel surround sound set up: using a microphone supplied, DCAC measures the position of the speakers and listeners within your room, then sets up the system to give the very best sound wherever you it.

Samsung BD-UP5000

February 22nd, 2008

image
image
The HD DVD format was on the losing end of the blue laser battle, but the early adopters of this original HD disc format may be interested in a set-top player that supports the playback of HD DVD and Blu-ray high-definition discs. Until all HD movies make the transition to the Blu-ray format, a combo HD disc player lets you focus on finding content you want rather than worrying whether that content is compatible with your hardware. And the Samsung BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player ($999 list) delivers the best image quality and disc performance I’ve seen in an HD disc player to date. The long-term enjoyment of any HD disc player depends on firmware updates that add new features and address any issues that arise, and the BD-UP5000 is the only dual-format HD disc player that can be conveniently updated directly over the Internet.

Although the BD-UP5000’s glossy black stylings are similar to those of other Samsung disc players, its face has been updated with rounded edges as well as a strip of recessed chrome-like trim along its lower lip. Its information display is positioned between the disc tray on the left and a circular control pad near the right-hand edge of the player’s face. The rack-friendly dimensions of the BD-UP5000 are 3.1 by 12.8 by 16.9 inches (HDW), and the unit tips the scales at 9.3 pounds.

Toshiba TDP-PX10U Mobile Projector

February 21st, 2008

image
image
If you need a portable projector that won’t weigh you down, the 2.9-pound Toshiba TDP-PX10U Mobile Projector ($1,499 direct) is worth a long look. It’s one of the few projectors with a built-in audio system that’s actually loud enough to be heard from more than 1 or 2 feet away. If you use sound in your presentations, that by itself is reason enough to put it on your short list. The DLP-based TDP-PX10U offers a native XGA (1,024-by-768) resolution. At 2.6 by 8.3 by 6.5 inches (HWD), it’s physically similar to other sub-3-pound projectors, including—for example—the ViewSonic PJ260D. Either projector is small enough to fit in most briefcases, even in the soft carrying cases they come with.

One small advantage the TDP-PX10U has over the ViewSonic projector is that the case allows a larger pouch for cables. I had no trouble fitting in the supplied remote, VGA cable, power cord, and remote receiver—which plugs into a computer’s USB port to let you control the mouse from the remote. Even better, there was room left over for additional cables, for connecting to a video source, for example.
