Fall in love with your movie collection all over again with the XD-E500. The XD-E500 not only upconverts standard DVD to 1080p resolution, but also enhances your viewing experience thanks to three user selectable modes: Sharp for added edge detail, Color for richer blues and greens, and Contrast for enhancement of details in darker scenes.

Features

  • image_thumb[3]
    image_thumb[3]
Upconversion up to 1080p/24 frames per second
  • 3 Picture Enhancement Modes
  • Preserved sound and video quality through single cable HDMI connection.
  • This product does not play HD DVD or Blu-Ray discs. It upconverts standard definition (480p) DVD content to HD (720p, 1080i or 1080p) to match the resolution of your HD display. Although near the picture quality, it does not produce or output native HD video content.
  • To display upconverted 720p, 1080i or 1080p video content, a 720p, 1080i or 1080p capable HDTV or HD Monitor (as applicable) with an HDCP capable HDMI or DVI input is required.
  • Compatibility with other HDMI-CEC products will vary by manufacturer. Some products will not be compatible at all or may only allow for limited functions.
  • The effect of enhancements may vary depending upon disc content quality and display device capability/functionality/settings. Depending on the quality of the DVD disc, some video noise may be visible.
  • Some DVD-R/DVD-RW discs may be incompatible due to laser pick up and disc design. Some recordable media or recording formats may not be supported.
  • Viewing 24 frames per second requires content created in 480p / 24 frames/sec and an HD display capable of accepting a 1080p/24 Hz signal.

Toshiba’s new xDE (Extended Detail Enhancement) DVD player aims to save your DVD collection. First, the xD-E500 converts your standard DVDs from 480p to full 1080p resolution.  But that is not all… oh no, that is not all. xDE uses a chipset with parameters specially developed for Toshiba and a combination of user-controlled picture improvement techniques including upconversion, edge enhancement, and color remapping to deliver a new level of near HD video quality from Standard DVDs.

The model also plays back CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, MP3 & WMA-encoded discs plus the JPEG Viewer (using Photo CDs) enabling the user to display digital photographs on your television in the JPEG digital format. Like most DVD players today, it plays back both Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks passing the signal via either digital coaxial, digital optical, or HDMI outputs. It comes with a 47-button remote with set-up, menu, and navigation. The XD-E500 further incorporates key features such as HDMI-CEC, DivX certification, and JPEG capability.

From the outside the XD-E500 looks like a standard DVD player. On the far left of its front is the disc tray, and above that is a slim button that when pressed, ejects the drive. There’s a bright XDE logo right in the center of the unit, which luckily can be turned off in the setup menu. Further to the right is the LCD screen, which is on the small side and cannot be dimmed. The glossy black finish on the XD-E500 fades from a lighter gray color on the bottom to completely black on top. Overall, it’s a good-looking disc player that should blend nicely into your home entertainment rack.

Toshiba says the Toshiba XD-E500’s sharp setting isn’t applied to the entire picture. Instead, the player analyses the image and determines where the sharpening effect could have the most benefit. In practice, this claim appeared to ring true for both test films, with the setting seeming to refine detail in areas such as grassy fields or hair. And impressively, it added little to no noise to the picture.

The Toshiba XD-E500’s colour mode was less successful, in some cases pumping hues to garish, unrealistic levels, especially in ‘The Warriors’.

The XD-E500 looks similar to Toshiba’s other upscaling DVD players, in that it’s slim, shallow and very light. Although the lack of substance isn’t an issue in a player that costs less that £50, like Toshiba’s own SD-480E, it’s somewhat disappointing in a deck that will set you back around £130 on the street. The front fascia is reasonably busy, with a full complement of control buttons, along with the power button on the right. The left is dominated by the disc tray, with an Open/Close button to the right of it. There’s a small display that indicates track information, and next to this is an array of indicator lights that show what mode of output has been selected.
