This is a sharp-looking HDTV, down to the piano black finish with below-screen speakers and a silver accent just above the low-profile stand. The SV420XVT should disprove the notion that lesser-known brands of TVs don’t have the same stylish appearance as their better-known competitors.
If you need lots of inputs, Vizio has you covered with four HDMI 1.3 jacks, two of which are on the side of the TV for gamers. There are also two component YPbPr video inputs with analog audio, two composite video jacks (who uses those anymore?), one S-video jack, and a 15-pin VGA jack for connecting to PCs.

When it comes to image sharpness, the Vizio SV420XVT leaves very little to be desired. We tested two dozen Blu-ray movies and a dozen different console games on this 42-inch HDTV. Each time, the crispness of the on-screen images was outstanding. While watching The Mummy, for instance, arguably one of Universal’s older films to appear on Blu-ray, two separate visitors asked us in all seriousness whether we were watching an animated film or a live-action one. The edges and sharpness were that good.

The 42-inch screen provides full 1080p resolution (1,920-by-1,080), and I was pleased that the VGA, HDMI, and component video ports were compatible with 1080p60 video signals. The set’s HDMI ports also support 1080p24 input from compatible Blu-ray players like the Sony BDP-S350. At its highest resolution settings, 1080i/p for increased detail and clarity, the set had no problems with overscan. When I dialed it down to 720p with a component video input, 6 percent of the image was stretched beyond the edge of the screen, but 720p input via HDMI exhibited no such loss. Standard-definition (480i) overscan measured 7 percent, a result bordering on excessive.
