Samsung ‘World’s Brightest’ 46-inch LCD enters mass production

May 8th, 2008

Samsung have today announced that they’ve begun mass producing their latest LCD panel, a “high bright” display measuring 46-inches.  The screen, which is intended initially for digital signage, is the brightest LCD in the world, at 1,500-nit.  That’s around three times as bright as a typical LCD.

The panel has a contrast ratio of 3,000:1, and is clearly visible even in well-lit areas.  Samsung have designed it so that multiple panels can be tiled together into video walls.  On its own it is 1,366 x 768 resolution, and has a 178-degree viewing angle.

This isn’t something you’re likely to see in your front room anytime in the near future; for a start it’d probably be too bright to make for comfortable viewing.  However Samsung are estimating the panel will enter volume shipping later on this month, so there’s a fair chance you may come across one at the mall or at a sports venue.

ViewSonic N4785p

May 2nd, 2008

An HDTV’s default picture settings almost never have anything to do with accurate and faithful image reproduction and typically have everything to do with grabbing a shopper’s attention among the crowded shelves of an electronics superstore. Those default picture presets are useful for providing the brightest picture possible when room lighting is uncontrollable, but critical HDTV viewing in a darkened environment, where the eye is most sensitive, requires a custom configuration or a picture preset that delivers an image closest to what the director envisioned in the edit room. The 47-inch ViewSonic N4785p ($1,999 list) is a 1080p LCD HDTV that offers an uncontrollably bright picture and few ways to improve upon its unrealistic and often disappointing image quality.

Samsung 50" DLP Rear Projection HDTV

December 24th, 2007

image
image
Features

DLP projection: Because DLP is up to 1000x faster than other display technologies, it produces quick, clear motion making it the best choice for sports. Also, it is immune to image retention (burn-in) because it is based on mirrors.

Full HD 1080p resolution: See all of your programming in the highest resolution currently possible. Many Microdisplay, LCD and Plasma sets are only able to display 1280 x 720 pixels. When showing 1080i content (1920 x 1080), these sets will lower the resolution. Not with a 1080p set. This never throws any resolution away.

LG’s 47-inch 47LBX LCD TV

December 12th, 2007

image
image
LG’s 47-inch 47LBX LCD TV is part of the company’s new Opus line of premium high-definition sets that are stylishly designed and offer plenty of useful extras, including a swivel stand and basic multimedia file support. This set handles standard-definition video better than most TVs, and its 120-Hz display technology does a good job of minimizing smearing in fast-moving imagery. Still, the 47LBX required several adjustments before producing a decent-looking picture. Also, out-of-box color quality exhibited more variance than I like to see in a high-definition set. Overall, the 47LBX requires more adjustment than should be necessary for a new HDTV, particularly when it’s LG’s flagship model.
