With its 1920 x 1080 resolution, the HD panel on Panasonic plasmas displays beautiful images without having to perform pixel conversion for the 1080p video signals processed by the video circuitry. Because super-high resolution is best appreciated on a large screen, Panasonic offers the 1080p HD panel in 50 inch and larger models. These dazzling images can be further enjoyed with the stunning detail and beauty of a Panasonic Blu-ray Disc player.Movie images are some of the most difficult for TV displays to reproduce. By working closely with movie studios for many years and applying research by the Panasonic Hollywood Lab, Studio Reference Mode on Panasonic plasma TVs enables the replication of colors that was originally intended by the director – exactly the way they are seen on reference monitors in professional film editing rooms.
Pro-Setting Mode offers the precise, highly detailed adjustment of image quality to suit personal preferences. Just the touch of a button on the remote executes setting adjustments such as tint, brightness, contour emphasis, gamma compensation and black expansion, which would otherwise require the use of special equipment to accomplish.EZ Sync HDAVI Control lets you operate all of your home theater components by pressing a single button on your TV’s remote control.GalleryPlayer allows you to enjoy the world’s finest high definition art and photography on your Panasonic HD plasma TV. Use the free GalleryPlayer software to purchase and download the images you like, and then play them on your Panasonic HDTV right from your PC. Sign-up is easy and free. Plus, you get a free collection of high definition images to enjoy right away in your home or office.Share your JPEG photos taken with a Lumix digital camera on your Panasonic plasma using the built-in SD card slot. Simply insert the SD card, which is about the size of a postage stamp, into the SD slot on the TV and enjoy a photo slideshow with Photo Viewer.

Panasonic TH-58PZ750U Plasma TV is upgraded version of TH-58PZ750U which we have reviewed earlier. Both the Plasma TVs display beautiful images with their 1920 x 1080 resolution on their High Definition panels. With a similar design, their beautiful screens are surrounded by rectangular, piano-black frames which captivate our attention. The most striking feature of Panasonic TH-58PZ750U Plasma TV is its Studio Reference Mode which enables the replication of colors that can be best enjoyed on large monitors just like in professional film editing rooms.

The TH-58PZ750U looks basically the same as the TH-58PZ700U, and we like its understated styling. Its huge, 58-inch-diagonal pane of glass is surrounded on all sides by a relatively thick frame of glossy black. From both sides of the frame peek the speakers, which consist of extremely thin, black, vertical strips. The top of the cabinet is angled back, as is a larger section along the bottom where you’ll find a door concealing controls and an AV input. A smaller hatch opens to reveal a slot for SD memory cards. The TH-58PZ750U measures 57.3 inches by 38.2 inches by 16.5 inches and weighs 165 pounds with the included, glossy black stand; sans stand, it measures 57.3 inches by 36.2 inches by 5.7 inches and weighs 141 pounds.

The realism of TV images is strongly linked to contrast ratio, and this plasma features a very high contrast ratio of up to 5,000-to-1. Such a wide range from black to white means great depth and dimensionality with vibrant colors. Deep blacks provide excellent shadow detail during dark scenes, while brilliant whites allow this Panasonic plasma to render bright scenes with vivid realism. Add to this impressive contrast ratio the ability to display 67.8 billion colors and what you have is a TV that shows you high definition content in all its glory.

The Panasonic TH58PZ750U also features “Studio Reference Mode” which helps the users to reproduce the exact same colors as seen on the reference monitors used during film editing, so you see the colors as they producers intended. A great feature of the TH-58PZ750U’s plasma screen is the anti-reflective coating, which is rare on plasmas, cutting down on annoying screen reflections from around the room. Internal ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuners provide over-the-air reception, and also supported playback of H.264 HD movie playback from SD memory cards. The TH-58PZ750U also has three HDMI inputs with EZ-Sync and also features Gallery Player.

As with all the plasma displays we know of, the Panasonic’s glass screen is a very efficient reflector of room light. The screen is treated with an anti-reflective compound, but I found it only marginally effective. The Panasonic will accept sources at up to 1080p/60. It will not, however, properly display a 1080p/24 image. You can also view both photos and home movies on the display via an SD card slot behind a second door under the screen.

The best images you can ever view on a Panasonic plasma don’t have anything to do with HDTV. Share your JPEG photos taken with an SD memory card-compatible digital camera on the TH58PZ750U through the set’s memory card slot. Simply insert the card, which is about the size of a postage stamp, into the slot and enjoy a photo slideshow. This Panasonic HDTV is GalleryPlayer Ready To View. GalleryPlayer allows you to enjoy the world’s finest high definition art and photography on your Panasonic HD plasma TV.
Pioneer showed off the next evolution of their plasma screen in the form of the KRP-500A (50 inch) and KRP-600A (60 inch) today. The screens are paired with the KRP-M01 as a separate media receiver “delivering uncompromised quality, finely-tuned performance and intelligent design”. The screens were announced back in June 2008.
The workings are inherited from the 100Hz Kuro plasma screens launched earlier this year, delivering a Full HD 1080/24p experience with Pioneer’s signature blacks and attention to quality and design. The difference now is that the panel is only 64mm thick and connected via a single cable, making this an idea solution for wall mounting. A 3m cable is supplied, but a 10m option is also available.
Connections-wise you are spoilt for choice with four HDMI, Component, three Scart, Composite, two antenna terminals (terrestrial/satellite), Ethernet, USB 2, PC and two common interface slots (terrestrial/satellite). (Pioneer emphasised that the satellite inputs are for European models, and do not support UK Freesat.) You also get optical digital audio, audio, subwoofer, SR+ and headphone jacks.
The media receiver gives you an 18 watt stereo digital amplifier with TruBass and SRS WOW HD support.

Review By Pioneer

The new models (KRP-500A amp; KRP-600A) are available in 50″ amp; 60″ screen sizes and have a depth of only 64mm which is 30mm less than its predecessors.

The size is due to Pioneer adopting the separate media centre system in which all connection are made via a separate box which has all of the 4 HDMI’s, 3 SCARTs, USB’s and even an Ethernet connection as well as the usual ones and therefore reduces the size of the back tuner panel of the screen themselves.

A single cable from the Tv to the media system allows this to be possible which is easily hidden and is provided with a 4m cable which uin most cases will be plenty long enough although a 10m cable is available too.

With its Enhanced Optimum Mode, the KRP-600A actively senses the light conditions and analyses the viewing content, ensuring that the picture you see is as perfect as it can be. In addition, the audio is harmonised with the programme being watched. The KRP-600A comes with an extra colour sensor that measures the colour characteristics of ambient light to provide the picture optimum to your eye’s sensation.

The KURO can recognise light, can tell day from night and analyse on-screen content in real time. Both monitors and plasmas with separate media receiver feature an AV Optimum Mode with optical light sensor for automated adjustment of picture settings according to the lighting conditions in the room and the actual image on the screen, resulting in the best viewing experience. In addition, the audio is harmonised with the programme being watched. The plasmas come with an extra colour sensor that measures the colour characteristics of ambient light to provide the optimum picture in relation to the colour temperature of the room’s ambient lighting conditions.

The Samsung PS50A558 is a great entry level 50 plasma tv for those who want the a superior picture without having to spend thousands. In our expert opinion the only thing lacking on this tv is 100HZ scanning, however, this is always a contentious issue of whether it is actually necessary. After having looked at fast action programmes on this 50 plasma tv we would have to agree.

A wide viewing angle of 175° is also offered, which makes it easy to view the TV from any part of the room. This TV consumes a power of 550W during runtime and less than a watt in stand-by mode. It measures 1230.3 (W) x 761.8 (H) x 95.0 (D) mm and weighs 37.4kg without the stand. The additional features available are Picture-in-Picture, Sleep Timer, clock, on/off Timer, Auto power off and Teletext level 2.5. The anti burn-in technology present, ensures that the screen does not have colour stains left back by certain images.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – TiVo Inc is developing a new digital video recorder for satellite TV provider DirecTV , rekindling a strained relationship and potentially opening the door to boosting the number of its subscribers.

TiVo shares climbed more than 2 percent on Wednesday after the companies said that they had extended their current deal and added the development, marketing and distribution of a new high-definition DirecTV DVR featuring TiVo service. The product’s launch is expected in the second half of 2009.

Terms of the deal, which also includes an extension of intellectual property arrangements, were not disclosed. But in a federal filing, TiVo said DirecTV will pay a substantially higher monthly fee for households using the new high definition DirecTV DVRs than it does for previously deployed models.

In addition, fees paid by DirecTV are subject to monthly minimums that escalate during the term of the pact starting in 2010 and those minimum payments are “substantially higher” than in the prior agreement, TiVo said. For more information visit i4u.com

Westinghouse on Thursday broke some new ground with its VK40F580D HDTV, the first from the company to feature a built-in DVD player. Unlike most such combos, the DVDs slide in via a front-mounted drive, and not on a side-mounted and reportedly harder-to-reach slot. The 40-inch LCD HDTV delivers 1080p resolution via its two HDMI inputs, and also sports a USB port for connecting portable or flash memory drives, digital cameras or digital audio players, among other compatible devices.

The built-in DVD player in question will upconvert standard definition movies to 1080p and automatically turn on the TV and set the proper input once it detects a DVD is being inserted. Westinghouse has also included an ATSC/ClearQAM tuner for HD broadcasts but has declined to immediately reveal contrast ratios and other image quality details.
The VK-40F580D is shipping now and sells for about $1,049.

While there have been several other ultra-thin TVs to cheat on size by moving some of the set’s guts into an external box, we’re starting to see a few of the biggies taking advantage of the newly-codified WHDI spec to beam the signal from the external box to the screen wirelessly. Details are somewhat thin on these new concept Mitsubushi panels, which are 40mm (a hair over 1.5 inches) thick and should reach manufacturing before the year is up. But their use of WHDI (like these Sharp sets before them) to link the panel to the external tuner box adds an interesting twist to this trend.

Trading a few millimeters shaved off the panel for a big honking box may not seem like a hugely advantageous situation, but WHDI has a range of over 100 feet (into the closet it can go) and allows for seamless pairing of compatible HDTV gear throughout your home, meaning the tuner (or the external Mitsubishi Blu-ray recorder shown next to it) could potentially be linked to other panels in the house. I kind of like the idea of stashing all of my modular source gear in a home theater server room of sorts, leaving only ultra-thin panels to receive the signals visible. That seems to be where WHDI is taking us, although Panasonic (who is not a WHDI member) could have something else up their sleeves.

Philips will launch a 38mm ultra-slim, ultra-light TV which has its picture processing electronics housed in a separate hub at IFA in Germany, Pocket-lint has learnt.
The new television, which will be called Essence, will sport a 42-inch screen and be able to be hung the wall like a picture, probably in a similar way to Sony’s Picture Frame range of televisions.
According to our un-named source, which we got via our contact form, the "Frame", rather than use the wireless HDMI connectivity touted by Philips in the past, be connected to the box of gubbins by a single cable.
However, it means you’ve now got to find somewhere for the box of tricks.
No details on screen quality however we would expect it to use the recently announced 9000 panel from Philips.
Philips has already announced that it will be officially launching the 2nd generation Aurea at the show.

Sony has announced a new range of home cinema systems apart of its BRAVIA range that promise to fill your living room with sound.
There will be three models in the new range; the DAV-IS50, HTD-890IS and HT-IS100.
The DAV-IS50 is capable of creating a total of 450Watts of power, will be gloss-black and features a slot-loading DVD/CD/MP3 player with surround-sound processing and an RDS FM/AM radio tuner. It will measure 21cm wide and a little over 10 cm tall.
According to Sony there will be hidden touch-sensor controls spring to life on the top panel when your hand moves to operate them very similar to LG’s home cinema offering.
New wireless rear speakers provide pure, interference-free surround-sound without the need for untidy wiring from the front to back of your room. The DAV-IS50 will upscale pictures from its built-in DVD player to 1080P
The HTD-890IS takes the speaker technology from the DAV-IS50 and adds a DVD/Hard Disk recorder with 160GB capacity and both digital and analogue TV tuners.
As well as playing all your DVDs, and allowing you to record to blank discs, the HTD-890IS can also store up to 455 hours of TV on its hard disk and users will be able to save up to 32 recording events up to a month ahead.
The HTD-890IS has two USB ports, enabling JPEG images to be captured and displayed from portable storage devices, and printed using a PictBridge printer. It also plays MP3 files from hard disk, CD-R/RW or USB storage.
The HT-IS100 is according to Sony a simple surround-sound solution for your Blu-ray Disc or DVD player.
Sony has yet to set a price for the systems.

TiVo launched a new service in conjunction with Starcom called Power||Watch that provides second-by-second ratings services for broadcasters. The service takes demographics segments from 20,000 homes that use TiVo hardware.

The service provides the broadcasters with information on what commercials viewers watch and what commercials they skip. TiVo says that the viewers in the passive panel have agreed to let it use personally identifiable viewing data to compile the findings.

The service showed in May that early adapters who have used TiVo for over 3 years show no more of likelihood to skip commercials that new users. The data also shows that all users place shift and skip commercials at a high rate. Specific commercials skipped by viewers did vary. Did they really need viewing details of 20,000 people to figure that stuff out?

As part of Sharp’s recent efforts to shove itself to the forefront of solar innovation, the company is showcasing a prototype of a 26-inch LCD Aquos TV that can be powered entirely by the sun. Now even the 1.6 billion people on earth without electricity won’t have an excuse to miss the next season of Lost.

The set has a contrast ratio of 10000:1 and a 20mm thick display panel. It requires about 30% less power than regular LCD TVs and gets its juice from one of Sharp’s triple-junction thin-film solar cell modules. The modules are about the same size as the television’s screen.

Sharp plans to market the LCD and the energy system as a pair and says that its product could be a hit with both people living off the grid and environmentally-conscious consumers. The company will be exhibiting this, and other energy-saving technologies, at the G8 summit on Monday.

The BBC is hard at work at the moment. Why? Because they’re trying to bring us HD broadcasts to Freeview within the next 18 months, that’s why. The appeal of watching HD TV is sky high, so the BBC is currently testing transmissions of a new technology that will make this a reality.

Although current Freeview boxes would be unable to process the signal, the arrival of this brand spanking new technology means HD quality broadcasts could soon be hitting the terrestrial airwaves. This trial, which uses second generation DVB-T specification DVB-T2, could pave the way for the introduction of HD onto Freeview by the end of 2009

Tiscali has designed a new electronic program guide for its TV subscribers.
The new tool enables viewers to locate on demand, catch up and broadcast programming, from within a huge library of content.
Searches can be carried out across a specific channel or all channels, as well as specifying broadcast only, on demand only, Catch Up TV or all of the above.
Users can look for programmes by title as well as by credits, including cast members and even by subject matter, using a SMS style text input.
Results are listed by title and relevance, displaying on demand content first, followed by scheduled programming, then Catch Up TV, as well as delivering other findings based on programme synopses and credits.
From that list viewers can set reminders, book recordings, add to favourites or navigate straight to that programme if it’s showing.
If the function is triggered from within a channel then users can continue to watch that programme in the quarter screen of the search area.
Tiscali TV is available to 10 million households across the UK and incorporates 80+ broadcast channels, Catch Up and on demand TV services.

Samsung’s stream of 82-inch monsters packing the company’s latest technology continues unabated, this time a minor update to the QuadHD behemoth we saw at CES brings so-outdated 120Hz motion processing and LED backlighting to keep blur and judder far, far away. We know what you’re thinking, its 3840×2160 resolution is no good unless you can write on it, luckily Samsung also has an 82-inch ultra high definition e-Board in its SID 2008 booth. OLED fans take heart, Samsung has reached economies of scale, hopefully meaning reasonably priced (and longer lasting) thin screens are due sooner instead of later. The Korea Times notes LG’s at the show as well, showcasing LCD roll-printing technology to replace the photolithography process that currently births the flat panels on our walls, but we simply can’t be bothered with a company that’s only the number two LCD manufacturer in the world.

Samsung have today announced that they’ve begun mass producing their latest LCD panel, a “high bright” display measuring 46-inches. The screen, which is intended initially for digital signage, is the brightest LCD in the world, at 1,500-nit. That’s around three times as bright as a typical LCD.

The panel has a contrast ratio of 3,000:1, and is clearly visible even in well-lit areas. Samsung have designed it so that multiple panels can be tiled together into video walls. On its own it is 1,366 x 768 resolution, and has a 178-degree viewing angle.

This isn’t something you’re likely to see in your front room anytime in the near future; for a start it’d probably be too bright to make for comfortable viewing. However Samsung are estimating the panel will enter volume shipping later on this month, so there’s a fair chance you may come across one at the mall or at a sports venue.

UK deets not yet revealed.

Simply having a big screen for yourself isn’t such a great idea now is it? That’s why Big Moving Pictures’ fleet of rolling mobile LED screen displays constitutes a new advertising medium. The company is mounting massive (40 x 22 ft) HDTV LED displays on trucks so it can engage the audience at major outdoor events (such as air shows and auto racing) in a new way. Big Moving Pictures Inc. (BMP), and Strongbase have announced the signing of a unique agreement to create the largest mobile LED screen displays ever produced. BMP will target air shows and auto races (NHRA and Indy) initially, but we can see big opportunities for developing the ‘rolling television network’ into a valuable niche advertising medium with high engagement, and large numbers of a high value audience. BMP will transport its MEGASCREENS to the largest events in the United States and Canada, and there’s obviously application for the technology in every country. Weighing 66,000 pounds and hydraulically operated, the MEGASCREENS are trailer-mounted for maximum portability and rapid deployment into a given situation.

Typical time from arriving onsite to displaying video will be under one hour, done by a single technician or truck driver. Image area sizing will be 39.4′W x 22′H in a true 16:9 aspect ratio for direct usage of 720P HDTV signals. LED element pitch is 15mm, brightness range up to 10,000NITS. HD video transmission to the screens will be accomplished by laser-based, digital microwave or fiber optic cabling systems. Its not everyday that we see such a huge screen in our backyard or in the stadium for that matter.

The picture perfect BRAVIA™ E4000 series lets you create a personal artistic statement and display breathtaking still images for everyone to enjoy. A radical departure from traditional sets, the newest BRAVIA™ series proves your TV doesn’t have to be a boring black rectangle taking up space when you’re not watching your favourite shows.
The beautifully styled E4000 series makes an elegant addition to any room décor. Inspired by the new Draw the LINE design concept by Sony, its clean, understated lines enhance your environment without distracting from enjoyment of the total viewing experience.
32-inch and 40-inch Full HD models are supplied with a stand, or can be wall mounted to become an integral part of your personal living space alongside other framed works of art. They’re complemented by a smaller 26-inch model – also wall mountable – that’s ideal for freestanding on a desk or table top with family photos.
There’s a choice of four colour frame options to blend effortlessly with contemporary or traditional interiors: Midnight Sky, Aluminium, Pearly White and Dark Walnut.
The E4000 series features Picture Frame Mode, displaying your favourite image on screen to suit your mood or the ambience of the room. Whether you’re socialising with dinner guests or just relaxing, Picture Frame Mode turns your TV screen into a ‘blank canvas’ for displaying treasured images with quality like no other.

By default you can select from a gallery of six artistic masterpieces stored in the television’s memory, ranging from beautiful landscapes to Pop Art and van Gogh.¹
Superb HD quality images are displayed in Picture Frame Mode with lush, warm colours and exquisite detail. In contrast with normal TV viewing mode, image brightness is reduced to mimic a real painting.

Alternatively, Picture Frame Mode is ideal for showing off your favourite photo, whether it’s a family portrait or an unforgettable holiday moment. Images can be displayed from any connected USB flash memory device such as a Micro Vault Tiny that slips discreetly into a socket on the side of the TV set.
When in Picture Frame Mode, power consumption is 35% lower than watching regular TV². For even greater energy efficiency, a timer switches from Picture Frame Mode to power-saving Standby Mode after a preset time – great for people who forget to switch off. This season’s BRAVIA™ line-up is also the most energy efficiency yet from Sony: in Standby Mode the E4000 consumes just 0.19W of power.
As you’d expect, the BRAVIA™ E4000 delivers superb picture quality whether you’re enjoying regular broadcasts, DVDs, movies on Blu-ray Disc™, the latest PLAYSTATION®3 games or HD footage captured with your Handycam® camcorder.
The range-topping 40-inch model features x.v.Colour for displaying an extended, more lifelike colour palette with compatible sources. The same model also supports PhotoTV HD mode, ensuring amazingly lifelike reproduction of still photos from a connected compatible Cyber-shot™ or a compatible α³ digital SLR camera.
“Once again Sony is reinventing ideas about your television’s role in the living room,” says Hiroshi Sakamoto, Marketing and Product Planning Vice President, TV Operations Europe, Sony Europe. “The BRAVIA™ E4000 series blurs boundaries between consumer electronics and fine art. This innovative, gorgeously styled television set looks as good on your wall as the pictures it displays.”

Sony will offer Blu-ray disc devices in a wider range of product lines and aims to increase the global market share of its BD products from 20% currently to 50% by the end of 2008, according to Sony president and Electronics CEO Ryoji Chubachi at a press conference in Taipei.
The new Blu-ray-flavoured devices to be offered by Sony include such models as “integrating an HD LCD TV with BD recording functionality”, Chubachi said, which we assume means an integrated BD-RW drive.
Chubachi said that Sony has far relied mainly on the PlayStation 3 to promote Blu-ray and that the company expects sales of the game console to increase as more and more Blu-ray movies are released by top Hollywood studios.
Sony will also extend its BD promotion from the current focus on the PS3 and BD players/recorders to “IT devices”, Chubachi said, presumably with BD drives offered in more VAIO notebooks.

(Even the model they hired to bring it out could do it.) The projector is planned to be sold worldwide, but the only date we have so far is the date for release in Japan — April 21. It will sell for around 200,000 yen (USD$1999, according to current exchange rates…).
At the announcement the presenters said that these types of ultraportable projectors are seeing massive growth right now, up to a 32% average increase. With this in mind, Sanyo sees an opportunity for growth by making projectors smaller and lighter.

If you’re thinking a 1365×768 resolution Pioneer Kuro could best competition featuring 120Hz technology, 1080p resolution and all the other latest buzzwords in high definition — you’d be right. Deep black levels made the difference, boosting the PDP-5080HD over the second place Panasonic TH-50PZ750. Those looking to purchase the winner might be in for a tough search, as rumors indicate retailers are out of stock (this goes for the PDP-4280HD as well) and not expecting new shipments anytime soon, pending new product announcements from Pioneer.

Mitsubishi will be the first to commercialize Laser HDTV technology, and at a special unveiling party at the top of the Palms hotel, just offered the press the first look at three 65-inch prototypes. The displays are rear-projection and are consequently about as deep as similarly sized DLP displays (we’d guess around 9-inches). Where they differ dramatically from DLP, however, is brightness and contrast. The prototypes were by far the brightest displays we’ve yet seen, and colors were extremely vibrant. Blacks were exceedingly dark, though we got the feeling there was a degree of texture somehow lost in the darkest areas, evidenced by the lack of detail on clothing in clips from Sin City that were part of the demo loops.

Mitsubishi executives focused on the fact that lasers are the most pure form of light, but wouldn’t give us any hard specifications on contrast ratio. We did manage to get a promise of retail release sometime in 2008, and comment that pricing would be equivalent to flat panel displays of the same size, which means around $5k to $7k. That’s a far cry from previous comments from Novalux (designer of the RGB lasers in the displays) that the technology would cost only half as much as alternate HDTV technologies. Mitsubishi is apparently banking on the high end for the initial launch of Laser HDTV, though it’ll be interesting to see what traction the company can gain in a market that is increasingly favoring hang on the wall flat panels.

Competition is a good thing, and now that the Apple TV is actually turning into a solid offering in its space, Vudu is cutting the price on its box to stay relevant. Originally launched at $399, you can now snag a Vudu to rent your movies and TV shows straight into your living room for $295. The best news is that if paid the full price for one of these things in the past 30 days, you can call up Vudu and get a $100 movie credit. Who knows if it’ll be enough to mitigate the aggressively-priced and now competitively-featured $229 Apple TV, but it looks like consumers are winning already.

Ultra High Definition) to life as a broadcast standard by 2015. With its 33 mega pixel (7,680 x 4,320) resolution and 22.2 channel surround sound, challenges so far have included building a camera that can record it, and equipment to transfer the 24Gbps uncompressed stream. Fortunately, some forward thinker in Japan’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry — that we are strongly considering as a write in candidate for the presidential elections — is beginning a joint project with private companies to make this happen, beginning with a research investment of about $2.7 million this year alone. I feel this will be the perfect companion to play games at ULTRA High Definition, wonder if Sony plans to have the next PlayStation featuring Hector like speeds of 63 million calculations a second that would make gaming wee bit more fun. If you’re still confused as to how much more res this is than anything you currently own look at the chart in the following image.

The sets are also equipped with the Proton’s most up-to-date exclusive Puriti™ video enhancement technology. Puriti-enhanced LCDs possess a wider color range than conventional LCD displays. A built-in artificial intelligence system analyzes color frequencies and intensity to assure the screen displays the most natural skin tones and the best blacks by compensating for picture detail lost to poor contrast.
Puriti processing converts analog signals to a pure digital format, while filtering out noise artifacts. It delivers extraordinarily broad horizontal and vertical viewing angles of 176 degrees, enabling viewers to enjoy a crisp, clear picture while sitting almost anywhere. Puriti’s 3D De-interlacing and Edge Enhancement capabilities eliminate jagged edges from interlaced video formats, providing smooth edges for moving objects. Its speedy refresh rate empowers LCD panels with the fastest response time in the industry, virtually eliminating delay or ghosting effects.
Energy efficient, Puriti processing also delivers the brightest LCD images in the market producing vivid colors even in brightly lit rooms, and extremely high contrast ratios for rich color representation.

Samsung a leading Korean electronics giant has announced the launch of a 31-inch ultra-thin organic screen, Flat screen makers are increasingly looking at active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) as a growth driver because they produce brighter images and use less power. Samsung SDI officials declined to say when the company’s 31-inch OLED screen would be mass-produced, saying the decision depended on TV set makers’ plans. Samsung SDI is also planning to mass-produce 14-inch screens in 2008, Yoo Eui-jin, head of Samsung SDI’s AM-OLED team, said at a press conference introducing the display. Although Yoo declined to name the companies that would use the AM-OLED screens, he said a number of companies had expressed interest. Samsung SDI said its 31-inch module is only 4.3 mm thick, or one-tenth of a typical liquid crystal display panel, and consumed less than half the electricity needed for a 32-inch LCD screen. Samsung SDI also said the lifespan of its display was 35,000 hours, the best performance among existing AM-OLEDs. While small AM-OLED displays are already in use on premium mobile phones and media players, large-sized models are particularly difficult and costly to make. Shipments of Sony’s 11-inch OLED TVs have been limited to 2,000 units per month. Earlier this month, Japan’s Toshiba Corp said it had shelved plans to sell AM-OLED TVs in 2009-10 because of the cost of mass production.

While the 11-inch set is only officially slated to launch in Japan on December 1st, a relatively modest reception in the country or a favorable supply of OLED panels could lead to an early US release, possibly reaching stores by the holidays.

The set would require a change to the format of its analog and digital TV tuners to accommodate American signals but could remain unchanged from its original design, which sports HDMI, Ethernet, and USB connections and generates an unprecedented 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
Pricing for the US version of the XEL-1 was not discussed; the TV is comparatively expensive at the equivalent of roughly $1,800 in Japan after taxes but may decrease in price for its transition to the US. Sony plans to release larger OLED TVs in the future but does not expect these for the next one to two years.

Sony is big on making friends in the LCD business. First they open a joint manufacturing plant with Samsung, and now they’ve announced an initiative with Sharp and Hitachi to create an LCD display that can be powered through only half the electricity needed by today’s models. Re-engineering LCD architecture coupled with advanced LED backlighting will bring the energy savings. Well, that, or we’ll all forget about the initiative by its 2011 payoff anyway.

Panasonic’s CEDIA booth featured two new value-priced additions to the company’s expanding line of 1080p-resolution plasma televisions. The 42-inch Panasonic TH-42PZ77U and the 50-inch TH-50PZ77U utilize the same panels used in the company’s 700-series of 1080p plasma televisions, and include two HDMI ports as well as an SD memory card slot for viewing digital images. Cost reductions of the new PZ77-series televisions were achieved by incorporating a different speaker package and eliminating the VGA port. Also, the 700-series’ anti-reflective screen coating has been changed to an anti-glare screen coating on the PZ77U-series televisions. Available later this month, the TH-42PZ77U and TH-50PZ77U will carry a suggested retail price of $1,799.95 and $2,799.95, respectively.

Long Beach (CA) – Pioneer this week began shipping its latest slate of plasma televisions, claiming they have the darkest black levels of any plasma set.

The new HDTVs are under Pioneer’s newly minted Kuro line. According to the company, it was able to engineer a new technology that allows black levels that are 80% darker than its previous models.

An insufficient level of black contrast has been one of the biggest complaints about plasma since the induction of the plasma vs. LCD war. Black levels affect the entire viewing experience by adding depth and vibrance to the picture.

Pioneer has launched four flagship Kuro HDTVs available in two sizes. The 42″ models with 1024 x 768 resolution start at $2700, while the 50″ size carries a resolution of 1365 x 768 at a beginning price of $3500.

One of few companies to still exclusively offer plasma sets, Pioneer spoke at this year’s CES saying the video format offered more potential expansion than LCD.

The new Kuro models will be available soon at retailers.

Microsoft Corp. is releasing a new version of its Internet Protocol Television software Monday and giving the product a new name: Microsoft Mediaroom.

It’s the latest step for the company in the IPTV market, in which traditional telephone lines deliver high-quality television signals to the home. Microsoft says telecom companies and others that use its IPTV software will be able to tout Microsoft Mediaroom as an “ingredient brand,” similar to the way computer makers cite “Intel Inside” for their machines.

The product used to be known as “Microsoft TV: IPTV Edition.”
That didn’t exactly roll off the tongue, acknowledged Ed Graczyk, Microsoft TV marketing director, explaining that it wasn’t meant as a consumer brand. The companies that use Microsoft’s IPTV software generally apply their own brands to the service. Examples include AT&T’s U-Verse, which is in 21 U.S. markets.

On June 13, 2007, Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. announced that they will launch LP-XL50, a front projector that can project 80-inch images from a distance of 49 cm.

The product will be available from December 21, 2007. And the company reports that the product will be priced at around 600,000 yen (USD 4,861).

Although the projection distance is 46 cm, the distance between the chassis and the wall may be only 8 cm. The projection distance of the company’s existing model LP-XL40 is 103 cm. The projector is targeted for the educational applications and so on.

The product uses the company’s proprietary aspheric mirror in the optical system to reduce the projection distance. The focus adjustment and image enlargement are carried out while the incident light is reflected on the mirror.

DSP blocks allow additional baseband programming functions for adding channel optimization features in the future. The company also began sampling an XC4000 family for midrange “value TV” markets, leaving out the QAM256 functions for handling ATSC/NTSC signals.

Xceive announced at the Computex show in Taiwan that it was working with Trident Microsystems on a reference design called Aspen for a mid- to high-end flat-panel system, marrying the XC5000 with Trident’s HD-TV Pro CX and FC system-on-a-chip designs. The Trident devices perform capture, digital and analog A/V processing, video scaling and color control.

Also at Computex, Xceive showed another reference design, Breckenridge, for a 7-inch HDTV with 16:9 aspect ratio, capable of receiving 18 ATSC formats or NTSC signals via terrestrial or cable signals. The primary board for Breckenridge measures 2.75 x 4.75 inches.

Japanese engineers show their work on Super Hi-Vision, which could replace today’s HDTV.
Martyn Williams, IDG News Service

High-definition TV may still be far from the norm in many countries, but that isn’t stopping engineers at Japan’s public broadcaster from pushing ahead with development of Super Hi-Vision, a system they hope will eventually replace HDTV. Last week engineers at NHK’s (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) Science and Technical Research Laboratories showed off their most recent work on the technology.

A Super Hi-Vision (SHV) picture is made up of 4,320 horizontal picture lines and 7,680 vertical lines. That’s four times the horizontal and vertical resolution of current HDTV or, put another way, a single Super Hi-Vision image is equivalent to 16 tiled HDTV screens.

In the year since it was last demonstrated, the company has developed an image sensor for use in TV cameras that can shoot an entire SHV screen.

Until now the sensors in NHK’s prototype SHV camera had half the resolution of an SHV image. Three were used, one each for red, blue and green, and an extra green sensor was added to effectively double the resolution possible and match that of SHV.

It could be a reality in 2 years time, thanks to a startup called SiBEAM and a few tv manufacturers eyeing the share in the HDTV market. Analysts believe the technology is expected to overtake WiFi and other wireless solutions currently in the market.

Okay, okay, you still need at least one wire though. The power cable.

The consumer watchdog has released it’s result on the reliability of plasma, lcd and projection tv and has said that plasma and lcd tv are as reliable as your CRT.

It stated that there are no repair issues during the first year or two of use for LCD TVs from major TV manufacturers – including JVC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony and Toshiba. (Dell LCD sets have had higher than average repairs).

In plasma, there have been no repair issues for Fujitsu, Hitachi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony or Toshiba. Plasma tv from Philips and Vizio however, has been higher than average.

When it comes to rear projection tv, the results have not been so encouraging.

It stated that rear-projection TVs using CRTs have been much more repair-prone than conventional picture-tube sets, with double the rate of repairs for five-year-old sets. The repair rates for the four brands for Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Sony, and Toshiba are comparable.

With the exception of Toshiba’s DLP, rear-projection microdisplay TVs using LCD, DLP, or LCoS technology have been even more repair-prone than CRT-based rear-projection TVs during their first year of operation. JVC’s LCoS is one of the worst performing set in this category.

So, the results are now in. Which set do you have, and do you agree with this findings?

Well, that’s what the creator of the new technology want you to believe.

An innovation by an Australian-US consortium, laser TV is promised to be “half the price, twice as good, and use a quarter of the electricity of conventional plasma and LCD TVs”.

Novalux chief executive Jean-Michel Pelaprat is so bold as to predict the death of plasma.

“If you look at any screen today, the colour content is roughly about 30-35 per cent of what the eye can see,” he said.

“But for the very first time with a laser TV we’ll be able to see 90 per cent of what the eye can see.

“All of a sudden what you see is a lifelike image on display.”

Combine that with energy efficiency, price advantage and the fact that the laser TVs will be half the weight and depth of plasma TVS, and Mr Pelaprat says “plasma is now something of the past”.

For some picture and info, go to the Novalux site.

Imagine, for example, people taking a drive in a van. The driver uses a car navigation system screen, the person in the passenger seat checks out tourist sites and restaurants, and the person in the back seat enjoys a movie on DVD, all in full-screen view.

We hope they’d be able to integrate this “threesome” technology into a HDTV soon. No more fighting for the remote anymore.

Watching those Darth Vader wannabes hovering around your cinema’s ticket booth may be a thing in the past.

In a recent interview, George Lucas – the man behind successful films like the Star Wars and Indiana Jones said he’s moving to making films for tv instead.

Stating that it makes no sense to spend hundreds of millions for just a single movie, Lucas said making films for tv is the way to go.

He added “We don’t want to make movies. We’re about to get into television. As far as Lucasfilm is concerned, we’ve moved away from the feature film thing because it’s too expensive and it’s too risky“.

It’s estimated that around 30 million Americans enjoy home theaters and are hurting ticket sales in cinemas. Thus, this announcement may not come as a surprise to industry experts.

It seems that along iTunes, downloadable movies will be the “future”.

In the constant war of HDTV, Canon has dropped a bombshell by unveiling it’s latest SED flat panel tv. Showed at CEATEC JAPAN 2006 and expected to be shipped around 2008, the set features a superb 50,000 : 1 contrast ratio and a stunning 1ms response time.

Those are definately difficult specs to beat!

Said to be even slimmer than today’s LCD or plasma tv, SED tv is a new technology that will bring a brighter and crispier image than an LCD or Plasma set.

No price have been mentioned but since Sharp, Sony and Samsung are all going to introduce their full HD sets this fall, Canon better position it’s price competitively.

With the advancement of HDTV into homes, you could clearly see which actors and actresses are the beauties and which are the ugly beasts.

Some may look more stunning when every single details of their faces is exposed, others may want to hide behind their closet.

Among the not-so-hot lists are Britney Spears who seems to looks like she’s a tired 34 year old stepmother and Teri Hatcher who really, really  needs a face makeover (even without HDTV we can all see this).

Among the best are the sultry Scarlett Johansson.

A few days ago we lost a great tv icon. The death of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter after being killed by a stingray barb to his chest was a surprise to many of his fans.

Since then, the amount of tribute to him overflows from every parts of the world.

In his homeland, his father declined a state funeral and decided to have this “ordinary bloke” be buried secretly. Rumors abound that his body will be buried at the Australia Zoo wildlife park.

Grieving fans have been flocking to his family’s Australia Zoo with flowers and notes. One says “I thought you were immortal. How I wish that was true!”

In the internet circle, the overwhelming shock of his news clogs internet traffic and crashed a few internet servers that hosts sites that covers his death. Soon after that, hundreds of videos created by the public in his honour flooded the internet.

Ebay and online stores stocked special tribute t-shirts. Songs were composed. Poems written. Special tribute blogs were created at least by two known sites.

In Beewah, hundreds of surfers circle the waves of Australia’s Pacific Coast and casts wildflowers into the ocean in his honour.

Animal Planet, the fledging tv network he helped promoted had decided to put up a Crickey Fund in his name to save wildlife and pledge to help covers his children’s education costs.

All these tributes are the signs of massive love this wildlife advocate have in the hearts of fans allover the world. His death reminds us all that life is so uncertain and fragile.

I have never been touched by the death of a tv personality. But frankly Steve, I’ll miss you!

Swiss scientists have declared a breakthrough in bringing “real colour” to your next tv and computer displays.

The new technology promise superior quality picture than plasma or lcd tvs. It uses “robotic muscles” to control thousands of tiny super prisms that will in turn produce a wide array of colors to the screen – something that is impossible to achive using current technology.

While current plasma or lcd displays (which are already superb in picture) uses 3 colors combination, the latest breakthrough is not confined by this rule. Thus, you’d get full spectrum of colors just like you see in nature.

If the old technology uses red, green and blue as it’s base and combined them to produce other colors, the new technology emits full range of colors – just like a rainbow.

For your information, right now even the latest and the most expensive tv wouldn’t be able to display all colors.

The technology will be available to consumer products in (sadly) 8 years time.

Ahah! I know what you’re thinking. This is not a conspiracy to make you buy a tv for those little ones. No! no! I’m not the one who make that declaration.

Instead, it’s a team of Italian doctors who said that. The study was done to see if kids who are about to get their blood test would react differently if they have been watching Tv prior to the test.

Kids who watched Tv said they don’t feel much pain. Kids in the other 2 groups ( one that didn’t watch tv, the other had their mother in the doctor’s room) said they had higher pain ratings, with little difference between the two groups.

So .. for those of you who are about to go to the dentist or is about to have a major operation – the moral of the story is this.

Buying a plasma Tv and watching it daily will help you in the operation theather. I didn’t say that.

The Italian doctor said that.
