The thing we like about this set is the fact that it turn itself off automatically when it doesn’t receive any signal after 15 minutes. It simply says - “I don’t wanna waste your time. That’s it. I give up!”.

For those of you who prefers a simple tv that plays DVD and doesn’t cost you a fortune, a tv combo like one from Panasonic is a good choice.

It’s a simple tv for a simple man.

Firstly, it’s picture quality and sound is typical Panasonic standard - clear and admirable. If you want better sound, this unit offers you a digital audio output specially made for your home theater system.
With this 27 inch tv comes a built-in dvd player that matches any high quality dvd player in the market. It comes with standard zoom and ability to read dvd, vcd, audio cd as well as other type of recordable devices such as cdrw.

You would be able to use your camcorder, video game console or hook it up to your home theather system using it’s front input/output slots. It also come with an earphone jack so that you could play your games in the middle of the night without disturbing anyone in the house.

This black PV -27d52 will not win any design award but could save you some space and cut down the amount of wires that dangles behind a typical CRT tv.

I wouldn’t recommend this unit to those who wants a high tech system with tons of features but for a typical person who needs a simple functional tv, this set is a must see.

RETAIL AT: around $350

If you do not have the budget for a plasma or lcd flat screen tv, Samsung may have an answer for you.

Called the SlimFit tv, Samsung has revelead a normal CRT tv - but slimmer. So, you wouldn’t mind having it in your living room - because it looks cool and doesn’t take up space. The once bulky CRT back is now just around 16 inch.

It comes in a few screen sizes but for now, I’ll just focus on the 27 inch TX S2783 model.

It has it’s own HDTV integrated tuner built in but lack a HDMI input. So if you want a true HDTV, you should skip this product. However, if you’re just looking for a tv that could handle high definition signal and look better than normal CRT, this Samsung is worth looking at.

The picture quality is like any other CRT that you’d have in the market but because it’s ready for HDTV, this set will be be able to show better pictures from HD signals. It’s comb filter is also digital. And uh! the remote is universal.

Like my Samsung CRT, the sound is not something that I am proud of. Although it is stated that this model comes with Dolby Digital Surround Sound, it just didn’t cut out. Of course, it’s uncomparable to other branded tv. I really do not know but Samsung tv just do not have that uumph kind of sound.

A nice tv with less bulkier back. However, it’s just a normal tv to me. Nothing to shout about.

RETAIL: around $350

If you can’t shell out your precious dollars for a plasma or lcd, we suggest you take a look at this standard 24 inch tv from Toshiba.

This pure flat tv offers less glare than conventional screens. It comes with standard headphone jacks and other video input/output. You would also get stereo sound and special colourstream input for DVD. Thus, you’d get the optimum viewing pleasure for all your dvd movies.

If you’ve never tried pure flat tv, this tv will show you why the pure flat technology is much superior than those conventional standard screen. Some people who have this tv and Sony Trinitron even says that this Toshiba has far sharper picture.

The bad news is this tv is hard to find online. Check your local electronic store.

Starting back in 1999, Sony has set a new standard for tv manufacturers with it’s Wega series.

The 27 inch Wega KV-27FS120 FD Trinitron is sharp, thanks to it’s “velocity scan modulation” technology that increases the sharpness of the picture to an intense level. There are 4 AV components hookup ( for your dvd, xbox etc), which is more than enough for most people.

The remote control can control your dvd/vcd, so you keep that dvd remote safe in it’s box. The only thing is, this flat screen tv is quite heavy (60 pound), and that makes it a not-so-ideal set for some fragile tv stand.

A great set for a standard tv.
