The UT42X902 features a native resolution of 1,920×1,080 and can thus handle every pixel from 1080i and 1080p source material, and can downscale 720p sources with ease. However, the connectivity options are a bit lacking to get said 1080p content. This set does support the HDMI 1.3 (x.v.Color) technology, but surprisingly this set features a mere single HDMI input. No doubt this is to keep the set as sleek with a minimalist design as possible, but this is a major shortcoming for the set.

By turning down the backlight, you’ll lower power consumption, but also make the television less bright. To give clearer preview of OLED’s features, should be said that the main design advantage is the organic diode itself. Unlike LCDs with same specialized inorganic diode, it can produce a greater amount of light directed at color pixels. Actually every pixel it the matrix produces its own light blast due to its organic nature. Organic diodes used in Sony OLED technology are semiconductors placed in microscopic caves. They produce light by making electronic holes and electrons circulate between cathode and anode. Distinctive feature here is that electronic holes are more mobile in the organic material that in inorganic one. Such a way every OLED display doesn’t require backlight and polarizer.

With the high-def format war between Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD finally relegated to the past, the makers of Blu-ray players have been able to concentrate on smoothing out the rocky path that early adopters encountered with some of the first models. The days when you couldn’t just assume that a given player would play your old CDs (let alone some of your new Blu-ray Discs!) might finally be gone. The BD-P1500 looks very different to the BD-P1400 – out goes the curved fascia and in comes a flat front panel and a slimmer chassis. The gorgeous gloss-black finish remains (a must for any self-respecting BD player) and buttons are kept to an absolute minimum, making this deck a real piece of eye candy.

Around the back, the lack of 5.1 or 7.1 analogue audio outputs is unsurprising at this price, but it means that you’ll need an AV receiver with HDMI inputs to enjoy HD audio soundtracks. Otherwise it offers all the basics, including HDMI, component, composite, optical digital and stereo audio outputs.

The P1500 can match its pricier peers in image processing both with DVD and Blu-ray. When tested with the Silicon Optix HQV Blu-ray benchmark disc, it exhibited overt video noise – the player clearly has no HD noise reduction technology – but its deinterlacing on the jaggies test was excellent.

DVD playback, including upscaling via HDMI to 1080p, is very good. It sailed through jaggies and text crawl tests on DVD without stumbling.

Samsung makes so many different varieties of flat-panel HDTVs, sometimes it’s difficult to keep up. This particular plasma, the 50-inch PN50A650, was released in the spring of 2008 right around the same time as the slightly less expensive PN50A550, which we reviewed way back then. We really like both of these displays, and both exhibit the same fundamentals: good but not great black levels and highly accurate color. The more expensive version adds more color of its own, in the form of the company’s trademark reddish-tinted frame, and if you appreciate the styling, the PN50A650 proves a worthy entrant in the tight 50-inch plasma race.

The Samsung PN50A650 performed excellently with HD content. Though this plasma is not nearly as bright, the HD picture images in The Fifth Element demonstrated great depth and 3-dimensionality. This created more definition in the Samsung picture quality compared to the Panasonic. The post calibration picture is warm and very realistic. Flesh tones were as good as I have seen. One slight negative is that the screen does exhibit some light glare from room conditions. Notice also that the Samsung plasma’s contrast setting noted above in calibrations section is 96, which is almost at peak. The Samsung plasma has a decidedly darker but finer picture.

The P50S601 features true 1,080p resolution, and it supports 480p/720p/1,080i/1,080p content as well. The picture is exceptional, with the lifelike colors and rich, deep blacks you’d expect from a top-of-the-line plasma set. Unfortunately, the P50S601’s presentation of standard-definition (480i) content is underwhelming. There are multiple aspect modes that allow you to stretch the picture accordingly to fit the screen, but regardless of which one you choose, SD images appear much grainier than we’d like. This is a common problem with HD sets, especially with larger screen sizes, but it is much more noticeable on the P50S601 than on other plasma TVs we’ve tested.

Samsung’s "Touch-of-Color" design ethic might not be for everyone, but the company should be applauded for breaking away from the gloss black bezels that it (and seemingly every company in the biz) have been addicted to for years, and trying something new. The effect is so subtle that it might actually be mistaken for the old gloss black approach in dim rooms, but with a little ambient lighting, the bezel’s translucency and reddish amber color show up around the edges, giving it a pleasant sort of glow. It strikes a nice balance between styling that’s too plain or completely over the top, and though we’re not interior designers, we think it fits in nicely in any room, especially those with more contemporary styling.

The on-screen display (OSD) menu will be familiar to anyone who owns a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable game console. You use smoothly sliding animated icons to navigate myriad options for adjusting the TV’s settings. The White Balance section of the OSD lets you control the color temperature of the TV–RGB gain for bright scenes and RGB bias (black level) for darker scenes–at a granular level. If you don’t have the time or tools to perform advanced calibration, Sony’s preset for color temperature options (Cool, Neutral, and Warm) and for brightness (such as Cinema and Vivid), are good settings for everyday viewing.

The KDL-52XBR4 offers a number of video-processing "enhancements," such as Digital Reality Creation (DRC), Live Color Creation, and Advanced Contrast Enhancer. However, I normally find that these degrade the picture rather than improve it, so I leave them turned off.

Also of dubious value, at least with movies and TV shows, is x.v.Color, Sony’s name for the xvYCC expanded color space facilitated by HDMI 1.3. Because no movies or TV shows are produced using the expanded color space, it’s better to display them using the standard space on the TV. The only exception is when viewing home video that was shot on one of Sony’s high-def camcorders that implement x.v.Color.

With the speakers mounted below the screen rather than on the left and right sides, this panel’s footprint is smaller than most. A black bezel surrounds the screen–something we’re happy to see a lot more of, since black around the screen adds to the perceived contrast ratio of the picture and aids in improving real-world performance. Cinema mode is recommended for viewing movies in a darkened room, and that’s what I used it for—movies only. Cinema held comfortable color and brightness levels but softened the detail, hardly what my crew and I wanted to experience during the Super Bowl. We wanted to see the individual blades of FieldTurf and the tiny holes in the jerseys. We auditioned the Normal picture mode, too, but its darker, more subdued overall picture was underwhelming. Once you’ve experience plasma in the rich, colorful Vivid mode it’s hard to go back to more subtle settings.

The 42-inch TH-42PX50U has an attractive two-toned design. The black bezel around the glass minimizes the frame and boosts the contrast. Positioning the aluminum speaker bar at the bottom of the screen rather than the sides shrinks the overall width of the display, which could be the difference between squeezing the TV into a cabinet or not.

The thinness of plasma TVs is a test for industrial designers who are constantly challenged to add more connectors. In this case, functionality pays the price as there are no front or side-mount audio/video inputs. Camcorder users and gamers have to run lengthy cables behind the TV when they want to plug in—an inconvenience at best—and impossible if the TV is mounted to the wall.

It also features Wi-Fi b/g/n, so you are spoilt for choice with connections. With an ever-increasing selection of true 1080p sets offering better contrast with fewer artifacts associated with interlacing, I find it hard to recommend the set for serious video aficionados.

Action sequences such as sports looks clean and without motion artifacts on this set. Standard definition source material is also fine but looses some sharpness and color saturation. As far as black level in the image is concerned you can take full benefit of it if the monitor is connected with 3rd generation Toshiba HD DVD players and which can transmit 1080P picture at 24 frames per second through HDMI 1.3 port and the same cable with a bandwidth of 10.2 gigabytes. If the HD DVD disc is coded in VC-1 codec it will give Cinema quality picture. Some HD DVD discs e.g. Transformers which are coded in AVC MPEG4 gives graphic looks where it shows animation type of picture on robots close-ups. HD DVDs of King Kong and Phantom of the Opera looks great on this set. They have a film-like look. Action packed HD DVD of M-I-III looks great.

Panasonic’s 2008 home-theater-in-a-box line has three contenders in the sub-$500 range, and we think the midline SC-PT760 will be the most popular model of the group. It comes with a smooth-running five-disc DVD changer, wireless surround speakers, an integrated, flip-down iPod dock, and upscales video over HDMI up to 1080p. The step-down model, the SC-PT660 ($300), is pretty much the same thing, just missing the wireless speakers and front speaker stands, and the step-up model SC-PT960 ($500) duplicates the SC-PT760’s features, but adds tallboy tower speakers up front. The SC-PT760’s sound quality on DVDs was clean, powerful, and dynamic (considering the bargain price tag). Stereo sound from CDs and the iPod was less impressive, and the unit offers skimpy connectivity for other sources–just one stereo and one surround audio line-in jack.

The PRO-111FD offers a ton of picture adjustments, presented this year in a redesigned onscreen menu. The list begins with seven picture modes, including a newly revised Optimum picture mode that (in conjunction with light and color sensors on the front panel) can automatically adjust the picture to suit your viewing conditions. There are six color-temperature options, including a manual mode that lets you precisely adjust the white balance. In addition to gamma and advanced noise-reduction controls, Pioneer includes two color-space options (one more vivid, one more natural), plus a color management system to precisely adjust the six color points. Pioneer also offers three different ways to convert 24p film sources for output on this display: the Standard mode applies traditional 3:2 to convert 24fps film to 30fps video; the Advance mode outputs 24fps to 72fps for a smoother, less juddery presentation; and the Smooth mode appears to do frame interpolation to present even smoother movement.

The main difference on the spec sheet between Pioneer’s non-Elite models and the Elite lineup comes in the form of picture adjustments. Your extra cash buys you a level of control over the image that’s equal to that of models from Samsung and LG, for example, although the PRO-111FD lacks the 10-point IRE color-temperature calibration we liked so much on select LG sets. We mention those two manufacturers partly because they provide a high level of picture control throughout their lineups, from the least to the most expensive models, and don’t make you pay significantly more for those controls.

Also available are three deinterlacing modes for 480i and 1080i signals. Standard mode reassembles the original film frames and displays them in a 3:2 cadence at 60Hz (a procedure called "inverse telecine"), while Advance mode does the same thing but displays each frame three times at a display rate of 72Hz, avoiding 3:2 pulldown. Smooth mode reassembles the original film frames and interpolates new frames between them as needed to achieve a display rate of 60Hz.
