JVC’s 5th generation D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology) detects and seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at 770p. Genessa provides 32-bit “turbo” powered picture processing for faster and more efficient sampling to drastically reduce jagged edges and increase the resolution of all sources. On an area by area basis, JVC’s exclusive Motion Adaptive Dynamic Gamma Correction (DGC) utilizes data from every signal level to ensure that tonal gradations are preserved in dark areas so images never look muddied.

Turning each of the color-management programs back on one by one took a toll. Set to Auto, Digital VNR worked pretty well, but left something to be desired in the area of what I call pixel recovery: fast-moving images created just the slightest blurring before quickly recovering, but the problem didn’t exist at all with Digital VNR turned off. Smart Sensor was the worst culprit: It automatically adjusts the contrast based on the program content, but in practice it just washes out the picture. Smart Sensor was almost as bad, adjusting the screen’s brightness based on the room’s level of ambient light.

JVC’s 32-inch LT-32X787 breaks the all-black mold espoused by many flat-panel HDTVs we’ve seen recently, reverting to a two-tone, black and silver motif. The black part comprises the frame around the screen, while the silver makes up the rest of the cabinet, including the thicker space below the screen to house the speakers. The set’s overall styling is modest if somewhat bland, judging by the conservative angles along the edges and bottom to the matching silver stand. The only accent on the unit’s face is a blue LED power indicator, which can thankfully be turned off. The JVC LT-32X787 measures 31.5 by 23.3 by 10.6 inches and weighs 38.3 pounds with the stand.

The digital 3D Y/C comb filter (with vertical contour correction) separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. And JVC’s exclusive Motion Adaptive Dynamic Gamma Correction (DGC) utilizes data from every signal level to ensure that tonal gradations are preserved in dark areas so images never look muddied.
