Step into the future with the 42-inch Toshiba 42HP66 plasma screen HDTV, which features a stylishly contemporary black cabinet and space-saving bottom mounted speaker system. The set’s built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. It comes with a tabletop stand that can be removed for wall mounting (with optional hardware).

This plasma set features Toshiba’s CableClear DNR+ technology, which optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable sources to eliminate video noise (”snow”) for a clean crisp image. It utilizes the digital 3D/YC comb filter to compare frames and determine the existence and extent of video noise. It then applies the needed amount of digital video noise reduction, and the appropriate sharpness adjustment to keep the picture clear. This feature now works on RF, composite and S-Video inputs, and can be selected by input.

Toshiba plasma TVs continue to impress us with their sleek looks and rich, high-contrast picture. A high-quality plasma will significantly upgrade your home theater experience and Toshiba’s “66-Series” models deliver tremendous bang for the buck. Plasma still holds a performance edge over flat-panel LCD when it comes to black level and contrast, and the 42″ 42HP66 drives that home with its 8000:1 contrast ratio.

The TV comes with an ATSC and QAM tuner so you can watch HDTV even if you don’t have HDTV service. In many cases a simple set of rabbit ears will be all you need if you live close enough to the transmitters. If you have cable, plug in the cable to the QAM tuner and see if your cable company is transmitting encrypted HD through your system. If you have HD service through your cable or satellite company you’ll want to use one of the TVs HDMI inputs to connect the picture. The TV has two HDMI inputs so if you have a next gen DVD player or and upconverting standard DVD player you can easily connect both sources. The only issue with this is that there is one calibration setting for both inputs. The TV also has a coaxial and optical digital output so you can enjoy Dolby Digital sound when watching over the air HDTV.

The GameTimer feature allows parents to set the television to shut off after a specified period of time and stay off until a lockout key code is entered. For optimum display of each type of input source, the Individual AV Settings by Input function allows you to make video adjustments for each type of input, such as RF, composite, S-Video, and each component video input. Other convenience features include color temperature control, closed captioning on mute, sleep timer, tri-lingual on-screen display, video input labeling, channel labeling, channel/video lock, and V-Chip parental controls.

The aesthetics of the Toshiba 42HP66 remind the review staff more of a “bargain basement” plasma television than one from a proud first-tier brand like Toshiba. The casing is very “plasticy,” and the silver and black casing is downright ugly. Fortunately Toshiba moves the speakers to the bottom of the screen for the 42HP66 so the consumers who do choose to buy this unit can fit it into their television cabinets.

The Toshiba 42HP66 includes those inputs that we have come to expect on today’s plasma televisions: 2 HDMI high-definition inputs, 3 component video inputs, 3 composite / S-Video inputs, and a PC input. There is a side input for a camcorder or video game system that will only be hooked up temporarily. Unfortunately there is no direct-input selection on the universal remote control.
