The P50T501 is a 50-inch plasma TV with a 1280 x 1080 resolution. As opposed to a true 1080p TV, this model uses a special panel technology called Alternate Lighting of Surfaces (ALiS) in which only alternate rows are illuminated at the same time. Consequently, the TV performs more like a 1080i panel. The connection panel includes three HDMI and two component video inputs, as well as a single RF input to access the internal ATSC, NTSC, and ClearQAM tuners. The HDMI inputs accept 1080p/60 but not 1080p/24, and one is located on the front panel for easy access. There’s no PC input, but an RS-232 port is available to integrate the TV into an advanced control system. An SD card reader on the front panel allows you to view JPEG photos.

With the PictureMaster HD IV processor, all video inputs are scaled up to match the native resolution of the unit to ensure a detailed picture no matter the source. For a better picture, the processor also performs noise reduction and other picture enhancements, such as dynamic contrast and histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, and the capability for 16-bit color. Users can select between four HD and six SD aspect modes, and three color temperature settings. The television can also be put in a split-screen mode so that two programs can be viewed simultaneously.

Hitachi also includes a trio of HDMI ports supporting 1080p. Two of the HDMI ports are on the rear of the TV and one is on the front panel. Two wideband component inputs, two S-video inputs, PC D-sub, coax connector and a pair of composite inputs rounds out the connectivity settings. An optical output is also included for digital audio out and an additional composite input set is located on the front panel. Hitachi even gave the P5S601 50” Ultravision plasma HDTV a motorized table top stand that swivels the screen automatically via the remote.

With a rounded black frame and slim, bottom-mounted speakers, the P50T501 has a look that’s at once eye-catching and understated. A flip-up panel located beneath the screen at the TV’s center hides a set of control buttons, along with a nicely decked-out A/V convenience input. In addition to standard composite-video and stereo audio jacks, you get both an HDMI connection for a high-def camcorder and an SD card slot for viewing digital photos. The included black stand appears fairly sturdy, but the TV tended to wobble a bit on it. On the plus side, you can swivel the stand around 45° in either direction.

Thanks to its PictureMaster™ HD IV digital video processor, you have the ability to integrate the P50T501 into your existing video system regardless of the type of input or resolution format you are receiving. The PictureMaster processor matches its HD1080 panel by upgrading all incoming signals, thus optimizing the picture performance of that source material. In addition, the P50T501′s two component video inputs accommodate a broad range of high-end analog input sources, including cable and satellite receivers, DVD players, VCRs, and video games. The PictureMaster also includes MPEG noise reduction, dynamic contrast, dynamic histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, four HD aspect modes, and six SD aspect modes.

The A550 line includes five color temperature presets, three modes of noise reduction and a film mode to engage the 2:3 pulldown to reduce judder when watching film content. The set featured special entertainment modes, but we were disappointed to find that these can’t be adjusted–and since there are adjustable picture modes that are independent per input, these extra modes seemed like an unnecessary addition. The PN58A550 features multiple aspect ratio modes, including four for HD sources with two that allow for subtle movement of the image, as well as four modes for standard definition content. We were generally pleased with the black levels on the set, though they weren’t quite not on par with the latest sets from Panasonic or Pioneer. However, we did find the color with the PN58A550 to be very vibrant and lifelike.
