LG 32LG30 32″ 720p LCD HDTV Review

Sponsors:

The LG30 series is the entry level line of 720p LCD televisions by LG for Spring 2008. These sets, similar to entry level offerings by other manufacturers are intended for people that want to get into the HDTV market without breaking the bank. Since HDTVs are relatively mature technology the 2008 models start with features considered high end just a few years prior. Multiple HDMI inputs, improved contrast ratio, and “hidden” speaker system are some of the upgrades made for 2008. A minor upgrade above the LG30 series is the LG50 series which jumps to a native 1080p resolution.

The 32LG30 cuts a slick-looking figure by small-screen HDTV standards, with its glossy black finish, slightly curved bottom edge with an angled panel, and skinny pedestal atop a rounded, swiveling stand. The power indicator is a large, yet dim, LED on the far right that can be disabled if it’s not your thing, and the speakers are hidden underneath the panel. All told, the set measures 31.5 inches wide by 23.7 inches tall by 8.9 inches deep and weighs 29.5 pounds; without the stand it shrinks to 31.5 inches wide by 21.4 inches tall by 3.1 inches deep and weighs 26.2 pounds.

Enabling a TV’s film detection feature should improve picture detail and reduce unwanted artifacts when displaying video material originally recorded at 24 fps, as many feature movies and prime-time TV shows are. The 32LG30’s ability to process video and film-based 1080i material correctly was good, though on my tests, the HD HQV Benchmark suite revealed that the TV wasn’t as effective at minimizing jagged-edge artifacts as the Sharp LC-32D44U or the Toshiba 32CV510U, both of which aced this challenging test.

The 32LG30 also has two 20 watt speakers, hidden from plain view, that surround the television’s panel. This design helps to create a natural surround sound effect. The 32LG30 even has a Clear Voice feature that claims to enhance human voices during dialog to make them clearer and easier to understand during scenes in which there is heavy background music or noise. This is a definite plus for those like me who at times have to turn subtitles on while watching a DVD because it is hard to make out what the actors are saying because of heavy bass or noise in the background.

Like choosing different sound effects on your stereo like opera hall, bar, or concert, your 32LG30 gives you image options that enhance whatever you’re watching. AV Mode optimizes the picture into Cinema Mode, Sports Mode, and Game Mode. And Expert Mode has been certificated by the ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) picture quality calibration institution, making it possible to finely tune the picture at a professional level. The result is a dynamic HDTV that is adaptable to many different modes and settings.
