In a recent 42 inch plasma TV roundup, we found ourselves impressed by LG’s entry-level 42PX4D. So we’re only too happy to find atop our test bench this month the latest model higher up in LG’s current range, the 42PX5D, which promises full high definition readiness.
The 42PX5D is every bit as sumptuous-looking as the older model, with its wide chassis positively imperious in its glossy black finish.

With the imminent arrival of high definition, LG intends to popularise the HD Ready plasma market by introducing a range of impressively specified screens at entry-level prices.
Models from the new PX5 series are equipped with a high-resolution panel and digital connectivity capable of displaying high-definition content from broadcast signals (i.e. Sky’s forthcoming HD service) or a compatible DVD player. Both digital Freeview and standard analogue tuners have also been integrated into the stylish, glossed design. And memory card sharks will also be able to view digital photos and play MP3 music through the large 42-inch screen.

The brightness of this model plasma TV is 1000 cd/m2 and the colour depth is 107.0 million. The contrast ratio comes to 5000:1, which is the ratio of the brightest white and the darkest black. LG 42PX5D HD Ready Plasma TV features Picture-in-Picture and progressive scan. The resolution of 1024×768 produces brighter and sharper pictures. Higher the resolution, clearer will be the pictures.

Connectivity includes HDMI and component video inputs, so it’s good to go for HD. Other connectors are in plentiful supply too, and include a D-Sub PC input, three Scarts (though only one, annoyingly, is RGB-capable), memory card slots for direct playback of digital photos or MP3s, and even a slot for adding a Conditional Access Module. As usual, this latter jack provides external evidence of the 42PX5D’s built-in terrestrial digital TV tuner.

The 42PX5D is also a bit of a fussy eater in that it doesn’t particularly like a standard definition diet; SD pictures look noticeably more prone to colour and noise problems than HD ones. Finally, if your room is generally quite bright, you’ll probably find the TV’s glossy screen rather reflective, especially while watching dark scenes.
The 42PX5D’s sound offers little reason for complaint. For starters the sound is propelled over a prodigiously wide area, but never loses cohesion. The set’s speakers splurge out healthy quantities of bass too - but not so much that it overwhelms dialogue, even during full-tilt action scenes.
