The 42-inch display size has become a battleground of sorts between liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and plasma displays. Ironically, the older technology, LCD, is the relative newcomer here. Prices on both sides have dropped quickly. You can now buy an HDTV (qualified by both resolution and the integration of a tuner) for just a little more than the price of an EDTV just over a year ago. LG Electronics is one of the only companies with their feet on both sides of this issue (the other biggie being their across-the-Han rival, Samsung).

The remote control is mostly good, though it lacks a backlight. It has a comfortable grip, and the main buttons are well situated and easy to find. Special ‘Bright+’ and ‘Bright-’ buttons control the LCD’s backlight. Thanks to SimpLink–LG’s version of HDMI’s Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) channel–the remote can control other SimpLink devices without requiring special programming.

All HD-compatible video inputs on the 47LBX are located on the back of the TV and face outward for easy access. Included are three HDMI ports, two component video inputs, and a VGA input for PC use. A single RF input feeds the set’s QAM/ATSC (unencrypted digital cable/DTV) tuner, and a RS-232C port is ready for use with programmable home-theater control systems. A front-accessible panel located on the left side of the TV provides composite/S-Video inputs as well as a USB port for attaching portable storage devices containing MP3s and JPEG images for playback.

The 47LBX has a healthy connection panel that includes three HDMI, two component video and one PC inputs, all of which accept 1080p. RS-232 and IR ports allow for integration into a more advanced control system, and there’s a USB port for MP3/JPEG playback. The onscreen menu sports a nice assortment of picture adjustments, including an adjustable backlight, direct access to advanced white-balance controls, low/high/off TruMotion options and the ability to enable LG’s XD processing, with contrast, color and noise settings. The Intelligent Eye mode automatically adjusts picture parameters based on your room’s lighting conditions.

The video menu doesn’t have as many advanced adjustments as some of LG’s newer, higher-end plasmas, like the 50PG60, but the major bases are covered. You get five picture modes and four color temperature options, including a user mode through which you can fine-tune the global red, green and blue settings to achieve a more accurate white balance. There is an option to enable LG’s XD processing, with contrast, color and noise settings. The menu also offers several features to prevent and counteract the effects of image retention, a common plasma concern. The five aspect ratio choices include a Set by Program mode that automatically determines the correct aspect ratio; however, there’s no mode for viewing 1080i/1080p sources with no overscan.

To make it a little bit more attractive, LG crafted the 47LBX with a lossy black bezel and an attached swivel stand that provides a generous 50 degrees of rotation-25 degrees of horizontal swivel in each direction. The 47LBX uses Super-IPS screen technology, which helps deliver impressive viewing angles that all but eliminate color saturation loss – even at extreme viewing angles.
