The new Panasonic design looks a lot like the old, albeit more rounded on the corners and the edges. The TC-PS1 series sports the hidden speakers that have become fashionable in HDTVs lately, with sound coming from underneath. Glossy black covers the entire frame, with a slim strip of silver shaped to mirror the gently curved bottom edge of the panel. Once we tore off the Energy Star sticker, the only other interruptions among all that black gloss were the Panasonic and Viera logos along with an indicator light and a big power button that nonetheless blended nicely into the frame. The company’s glossy black stand looks the same as last year, and still lacks swivel capability.

Panasonic’s new NeoPDP plasma technology significantly improves both picture contrast and black levels. The latest version of Panasonic’s Real Black Drive System reduces the illumination level when plasma pixels shut off, yielding very deep black levels (to see an illustration, click on “more photos”). Note that the TC-P50S1′s impressive 40,000:1 contrast ratio spec is “native” contrast, which is a more accurate measure of real-world performance than the much higher “dynamic” contrast spec.

Those two picture qualities are worth noting for. The TC-P50S1 has excellent deep black level that it makes a dark scene look real. Even the shadow formations have lesser noise compared to other plasma displays. The deep black helps colors stand out more to compensate for the lack of color accuracy of this model.
Externally, the TC-P50S1 looks sleek and elegant with its glossy black finish. The design is generally similar to the previous Panasonic’s plasma TVs except that the edges of this new series are more rounded. Connectivity ports are just enough – 3 HDMI ports, RF, 2 composite-video ports and S-video. There is also a slot for an SD card which allows pictures saved in the card to be viewed on the big screen.

The TC-P50S1 has a decent amount of picture adjustments but lacks some of the advanced options you’ll find in other displays. Picture settings include five picture modes, three color-temperature options (but no advanced white-balance controls to fine tune the color temperature), video and MPEG noise-reduction, and a C.A.T.S. feature that automatically adjusts the picture based on ambient light. This model does not have the 24p Direct In mode found in the higher-end models, which lets you dictate whether to output 24p film content at 60 Hz (which involves 3:2 pulldown) or 48 Hz (which involves 2:2 pulldown and produces less judder). The TC-P50S1 does have several features to prevent or counteract the effects of short-term image retention (a common plasma concern), including a pixel orbiter, a scrolling bar, and the option to use gray sidebars instead of black.
