image The Samsung HL61A750 offers the sharpest and clearest images available in an HDTV. Despite its impressive 61″ display this rear projection HDTV is surprisingly thin at only 14.4″ deep. The HL61A750′s DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with millions of mirrors switching on and off 15,000 times a second to deliver ultra-sharp picture for fast moving images. When combined with Samsung’s Cinema Pure light engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that is closer to film.

Samsung’s HL61A750 is the company’s top-of-the-line 61-inch model. It has a really solid feature package, with lots of options focused on optimizing the picture, and generous connectivity to accommodate all your video sources without any issues. Most importantly–at least to this reviewer–it is an excellent performer, with deep blacks and accurate color temperature after just a few tweaks in the user menu. Rear-pros may be a dying breed, but if you’re looking to get 61 inches for less than $2,000 (street price), the Samsung HL61A750 is an excellent performer and handily beats the comparable Mitsubishi WD-65735

Based on the impressive performance we saw on the first-generation HL-T5087S a few months ago, we really can’t blame Samsung for undertaking a new series of their LED-powered DLP HDTVs.  By their design, DLP-based televisions–TVs incorporating Texas Instruments’ “Digital Light Processing” technology–are projection-based.  They utilize a light source in conjunction with hundreds of thousands of microscopic synchronized mirrors on one or more chips to create the picture on screen.

A lighting control available with hundreds of light sources composing LED backlighting allows the dynamic contrast ratio to be improved by local dimming. This is something not possible with a single rod shape CCFL backlight. By individually controlling the light output of each LED light source darker image areas can be dimmed locally and bright areas lit to the maximum. A useful result of this local dimming control is a reduction in power consumption.

Instead of using a lamp and spinning color wheel like most DLP sets, the HL61A750 features a series of rapid-flashing Light Emitting Diodes that produce the red, green and blue primary colors, as well as the TV’s illumination. For the few people who occasionally see “rainbows” — distracting flashes of color — when watching conventional DLP TVs, Samsung’s LED-based light engine usually solves the issue. This system delivers high-contrast images with an ultra-wide color range, and 40% higher brightness than last year’s models. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation, lower energy consumption, and much quicker start-up.

Under average viewing conditions, 60,000 hours works out to over 13 years. The image brightness and color will not diminish either. A built-in light sensor with beam current feedback ensures stable light output over the life of the TV. This spares you the inconvenience and expense of having to replace costly lamps. And since the light source is LED-based, virtually no warm-up time is needed. The picture appears within seconds and with full brighness.
