Samsung’s 550 Series is a perfect way to step up to Full HD 1080p resolution. A fast 5 ms response rate produces smooth-motion scenes for sports and action movies, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1 makes for deep blacks and crisp lines (15,000:1 in 32-inch and 37-inch models). Superb connectivity and networking with a USB port and 3 HDMI 1.3 ports with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) means these HDTVs play well with all of your other electronics. Easily enjoy MPEG and JPEG files stored on external devices by connecting through the side-mounted USB 2.0, turn your LCD into a full-scale home viewing gallery, or connect your MP3 player for a dynamic audio experience.

This full HD 1080p model features a native resolution of 1,920×1,080 and can thus fit every pixel of 1080i and 1080p content, including sources from Blu-ray (and HD-DVD if you happened to get a player before these were discontinued). We liked how this set can upconvert 720p source material, and we were very pleased overall with the picture with the Samsung LN46A550. HD content is, in a word, spectacular. The picture has very rich colors, and is generally free of any “jaggies” or other digital distractions. With a contrast ratio of 30,000:1, the black levels were quite good, and for the price the results were more than acceptable.

The LN46A550 is easy to use. The icon-based on-screen menus are clear and easy to read, and a brief note at the bottom of the screen explains what each item does. A separate Tools button on the remote control acts the same way that Windows’ right-click mouse button does, bringing up a handy selection of options appropriate for the current input. Another neat feature: When it turns on a connected device (such as a DVD player), the TV automatically switches the input to that source.

If you are using a Blu-ray player, a receiver, or anything else that is capable of sending a high definition signal, don’t forget to purchase the right cables. Many people don’t realize what a significant difference the right cables make, and when they get their new high definition equipment home, they think the equipment itself is to blame when the picture or sound isn’t as good as it should be. This is because most components (Blu-ray, receivers, etc) don’t come with cables, so people often use whatever they have around the house, or buy cheap cables, thinking “it will do.” Another reason people don’t buy the right cables is because trying to figure out which cables you need can be daunting, and it’s hard to know where to start. Our sales representatives are there to explain all your options, so you can make the best purchase and get the most out of your HDTV.

The LN46A550 offers all of the control over the picture found on more expensive Samsungs. It has three adjustable picture modes that are each independent per input. That’s great, but in addition there are three more picture presets, called “Entertainment Modes,” which cannot be adjusted and are accessible via a separate key on the remote and the Setup menu. This arrangement is unnecessarily confusing on a TV with so many settings anyway; we’d prefer to have all of the picture modes, both adjustable and nonadjustable, be accessible together from a single key on the remote and one area of the Picture menu.
