Samsung LN55A950 LCD HDTV Review

The LN55A950 employs Samsung’s SmartLighting technology to deliver much richer blacks than most other LCD TVs. Unlike a conventional fluorescent backlight which needs to remain on at all times, the SmartLighting system positions an array of bright white LEDs behind the LCD panel. Different clusters of LEDs can be controlled independently, from full-on brightness to completely off. The ability to turn the light source off allows the SmartLighting system to deliver much deeper black levels than a conventional fluorescent backlight. SmartLighting also dramatically improves picture contrast, expanding the range of gray tones from absolute black to brilliant white. Images on the LN55A950 have tremendous punch and impact, along with colors that look more nuanced and natural.

Contrast and brightness levels achieve new heights in this LCD TV. Watch movies and shows come to life with enhanced details in very dark or bright scenes. And the LED backlight with local dimming lets you enjoy a sharper picture quality that’s sure to catch your eye.

Auto Motion Plus 120Hz
Your action-packed sports and movies have never looked this real. Auto Motion Plus 120Hz™ technology virtually eliminates any motion blur and creates smooth transitions between frames. What’s the secret? Auto Motion Plus calculates the image between frames and inserts it, creating a non-repetitive transition from one to the next. The result is a clearer picture you have to see to believe.

Ultra Clear Panel
With SAMSUNG’s Ultra Clear Panel™ colors are more vibrant than ever before. The brighter, clearer picture will definitely amaze you. Tired of annoying glare getting in the way of your movie-watching? Our ultra clear panel technology enhances contrast and reduces reflection so you can enjoy an overall outstanding viewing experience

LCDs have always been good at delivering the kind of bright and punchy image that keeps them flying off the shelves in brightly lit Costcos. But their picture contrast and shadow detail have never been quite as impressive as the finest plasmas. Unlike a plasma, where each pixel generates its own light and can be turned on and off individually, most LCDs use a fluorescent backlight that’s constantly on, with the LCD crystals opening and closing sequentially to block the light. This system is less than perfect because each pixel lets a tiny bit of the light bleed through even when fully shuttered, resulting in a decreased overall black level.

The 55-inch LN55A950 is the larger of two screen sizes offered in Samsung’s 2008 flagship 9 Series, the other being the 46-inch LN46A950. The 9 Series is the successor to last year’s 81 Series, which took bragging rights as the first mass-market LCD TVs to feature LED backlighting. (Sony first offered an LED-backlit model in its Qualia line all the way back in 2004, but with prices in the neighborhood of $15K for a 46-incher, it was more of a technological statement than a real product.)

Here’s a little secret: television and film were not created equal. Film is shot at 24 frames per second. And just about every movie disc you can buy is encoded at that speed. But television programming runs at 30 frames per second, and most TVs conform to that standard. When you watch a DVD on your TV, fitting that 24-frame content onto a 30-frame screen isn’t a seamless process. You can’t divide 24 by 30 evenly so video engineers fill in the gaps by placing one frame on the screen three times and the next one after that two times, which can cause stutter and other visual artifacts.
