Sony’s ultra-sleek XBR7 models are among the most stylish new HDTVs available. Sony bucks an industry trend by positioning the speakers out to the sides, rather than along the bottom, for more spacious sound that stays anchored to the on-screen action. The 40″ KDL-40XBR7 boasts full 1080p resolution, plus advanced video processing, to display high-def images with striking clarity and dimensionality.
Motionflow 120Hz processing ensures smooth, natural motion
Every LCD TV maker takes a different approach to 120Hz processing, but Sony’s Motionflow technology is one of the most sophisticated and effective. First, it actually reduces blur in the original source image captured by the camera, then it doubles the video frame rate by inserting 60 entirely new frames between the original 60 frames. The system analyzes the motion of specific on-screen objects as well as overall movement in each scene, adjusting the amount of enhancement to create seamlessly smooth, sharp pictures.
10-bit LCD panel and video processing for more accurate colors
Another key factor determining picture quality is the color resolution of the LCD panel and video processing circuitry. The KDL-40XBR7′s 10-bit LCD panel can display 1024 levels of gradation for each primary color — red, green, and blue — compared to only 256 steps for the 8-bit panels found in most TVs. And 10-bit video processing takes full advantage of the panel’s exceptional color resolution to show even the subtlest shadings.
Enjoy better-looking non-HD video, too
High-def video looks amazing, but realistically, we’ll probably still be watching some standard-definition programs for a while yet. And that’s when you’ll appreciate the KDL-40XBR7′s powerful video processing. BRAVIA Engine 2 EX is actually a collection of unique Sony technologies which work together to reduce noise, enhance detail, and optimize contrast on a scene-by-scene basis.
Versatile inputs keep you ready for the latest HD sources
The KDL-40XBR7′s “jack pack” includes four advanced HDMI connections that will ensure maximum picture quality as high-def formats evolve. Sony calls them 24p True Cinema capable, which means they can accept the 1080p/24 output from a Blu-ray player. Most movies are originally shot at 24p (24 frames per second), so this feature lets you see video in its most flawless form. One HDMI input is placed on the side of the TV so it’s easier to hook up an HD camcorder or video game console.

The larger three sizes in the series, available in 40, 46 and 52-inch sizes, have the same MotionFlow dejudder processing and 120Hz refresh rate found on the KDL-46W4100, along with that model’s TV Guide onscreen EPG and graphically intense menu system. They also include a USB port for music and photo playback; for the latter the company includes an Ethernet port on the back (no word on whether it will allow firmware updates) that can communicate with DLNA-compliant networked PCs to display digital photos on the big screen.

Along with Full HD 1080p resolution the new KDL-40XBR7 has Sony’s BRAVIA Engine™ EX fully digital video processor to improve the color accuracy and reduce any kind of noise distortion. For smoother and judder-free picture quality, this LCD TV uses Motionflow™ 120Hz with double frame rate technology. This is not all, Sony BRAVIA XBR7-Series is embellished with two other features of which the Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) circuit adjusts contrast color dynamically to produce deeper blacks while preserving shadow details. The second feature, the Live Color Creation™ technology in combination with a special WCG-CCFL backlight refines the color even further and delivers a more real-life image quality.

Movies and many prime time TV programs are shot at 24 frames per second. This means that TVs operating at any refresh rate that is not an even multiple of 24 will have to do some interpolation to present the content. TVs operating at at 30Hz or 60Hz traditionally solved this via a method called “2:3 pulldown”. The television repeats the first film frame over the first two fields of video, and the second film frame over the next three fields of video (1, 1, 2, 2, 2), and continues to do this with the 3rd and 4th frames, the 5th and 6th framer (1,1,2,2,2 – 3,3,4,4,4 – 5,5,6,6,6), and so on until 24 frames are displayed over 60 refresh cycles.

In terms of connectivity and picture adjustments, the KDL-40XBR7 is as fully loaded as the top-shelf XBR8 models. The generous connection panel includes four HDMI, two component video, one PC, and one RF input to access the internal NTSC, ATSC, and Clear-QAM tuners. The HDMI inputs accept both 1080p/60 and 1080p/24 signals, and one HDMI input is located on the side panel for easy access. The TV Guide on Screen program guide and picture-in-picture functionality are available.

Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity, Sony’s KDL40XBR7 features four HDMI connections. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components.
