The Sony BRAVIA KDL-46XBR8 HDTV represents the next step forward in HDTV technology, with a TRILUMINOS RGB dynamic LED backlight that utilizes clusters of red, green, and blue LEDs to produce breathtaking images with enhanced color purity. This clustered arrangement also allows the XBR8 to display deep blacks alongside bright whites, creating images with startling depth and exceptional shadow detail.

Take the next step forward in HDTV technology with the KDL46XBR8 BRAVIA® XBR® LCD flat panel HDTV. In addition to full HD 1080p, the XBR-8 series TV features TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED backlight which produces breathtaking images with enhanced color purity that result in deep blacks and bright whites with startling depth and exceptional shadow detail. You’ll also see the difference with Motionflow™ 120Hz Pro technology which enhances motion and delivers a smoother and clearer picture. Your 1080p HD images will look more breathtaking than ever thanks to the BRAVIA Engine™ 2 Pro full digital video processor. The KDL46XBR8 has DMex functionality which lets you expand the capabilities of your HDTV by adding optional BRAVIA Link modules (sold separately), plus it comes with plenty of connectivity options to connect your video sources.

LED Backlighting: offering huge huge upgrades in picture quality, realism and detail with much deeper black levels and higher contrast ratios than conventional and more common LCD sets. Also has longer lifespan and lower power consumption because of the LED-LCD backlighting.

16:9 Full High Definition 1080p resolution: for the absolute true high definition effect out of your HDTV

MotionFlow 120Hz refresh rate: effectively doubles the frame rate of your HDTV resulting in much smoother and natural imaging by reducing judder and problematic action imaging defects.

10-Bit display panel with 10-Bit image processing: most current HDTVs you will see are in 8-bit, and the extra 2-bits actually adds dramatically more color possibilities, not just 30-40% like one might imagine…. an 8-bit panel has 16,777,216 colors possible, but a 10-bit panel has 1,073,741,824 colors possible or a 64 times more possibility.

24p TrueCinema Mode: Because of the 120Hz frame rate upgrade, the Sony XBR8 is capable to play films and bluray directly how it was supposed to be played, movies are filmed at 24 frames per second and because 120HZ is a direct multiple of that where the standard 60FPS is not, there is no need for guesswork or conversion like in other televisions… resulting in a more true, natural and better looking cinema experience.

More than enough inputs: With 4 HDMI1.4 ports, 2 components, composite and other connectors the Sony XBR8 series televisions can handle all your peripherals and hook-ups.

Sony really has gone all out of the Bravia XBR8 series to make it the most modern and top of the range HDTV, which looks set to be one of the very best for 2008. The most notable feature of the Sony XBR8 series is the Triluminos RGB LED backlight, and it’s Advanced Contrast Enhancer Pro (ACE Pro) local dimming technology. By using LEDs as the backlight the contrast is improved, power consumption is reduced and local dimming of individual LED areas can enhanced the image further by dimming the brightness of the darker areas of the image.

High-def video looks amazing, but realistically, most people will continue to watch some standard-definition programs for a while yet. And that’s when the KDL-46XBR8’s video processing takes center stage. BRAVIA Engine 2™ PRO is actually a collection of unique Sony technologies which work together to reduce noise, enhance detail, and optimize contrast on a scene-by-scene basis. Non-HD sources automatically get upconverted to 1080p.

The KDL-46XBR8 boasts an excellent assortment of picture adjustments, beginning with four picture modes for video content (vivid, standard, cinema, and custom) and four modes specifically for photo viewing. You get four color temperatures (cool, neutral, warm 1, and warm 2), noise reduction, an adjustable backlight, and a light sensor that can automatically tailor the TV’s light output to suit your viewing environment. The menu also includes white balance and gamma controls, as well as two color spaces. Compared with the basic Motionflow 120Hz menu that includes three setup options, Motionflow 120Hz Pro adds a fourth choice (Clear) that employs the sequential scanning of the LED backlights to reduce motion blur without adding frame interpolation.

With real content and LED Dynamic Control enabled, the contrast ratio is going vary per shot, ranging from the minimum (the ANSI contrast ratio) to somewhere near but not exactly the full-on/full-off contrast ratio, depending on what is on screen.Compare this to a normal LCD whose contrast ratio remains roughly the same no matter what is on screen. LCDs with a backlight that adjusts as a whole don’t change the contrast ratio within a shot, only between different shots. Each shot has the same contrast ratio, the backlight just adjusts so each shot has a different black level, but actual overall contrast ratio stays the same.
