The XVT Series marks the first appearance of 120Hz technology in Vizio LCD HDTVs. The line includes screen sizes of 42, 47, and 55 inches; given that these are Vizio displays, it should come as no surprise that all three models are more than competitively priced for 120Hz TVs at their respective screen sizes. The 47-inch, 1080p SV470XVT is priced at just $1,399.99. We have not performed a hands-on review of this product, but here is an overview of the TV’s features. Obviously, the marquee feature is a 120Hz frame rate, designed to reduce motion blur with faster-moving content; Vizio also incorporates what it calls Smooth Motion technology to reduce judder in film-based sources and produce smoother, cleaner motion.

The display is truly beautiful. It features a piano gloss black bezel that is just over an inch in height on the top and sides of the display. The bottom is adorned with the permanently-affixed speakers and a silver central accent area that is really an inactive center channel speaker. There is a wireless 5.1 surround system option that is talked about in the manual (but not to be found anywhere on the Vizio website). When activated with a valid 5.1 source signal, the bottom right of the center channel lights up with a red LED logo that spells out “5.1″. Nifty, and I would have liked to have seen this discrete center channel used even without the wireless surrounds.

The color gamut is the range of colors that a television is capable of displaying, ideally the color gamut will match the international standard for high definition tvs. The Vizio SV470XVT’s color gamut did have some minor problems, but was otherwise good. Below you can see the Vizio SV470XVT’s color gamut graphed against the standard, called ITU Recommendation .709. The Vizio SV470XVT’s color gamut is shown with a dotted line while the standard is shown with a solid line.

The Vizio SV470XVT’s remote is angular and we found it did not balance well in the hand. The buttons are large and clearly labeled. We did find that the infrared sensor on the TV itself was not very sensitive; generally you need to make sure you are pointing the remote directly at the infrared sensor to get a response. The Vizio SV470XVT’s on-screen menu interface was something we liked; it was simple and attractive, but still offered a reasonable selection of advanced options for tweaking the image quality. We were also happy with the audio quality from the Vizio SV470XVT’s built-in speakers; they produced decent sound at a good volume level.
