The HRT403DA offers a phenomenal amount of features, leaving virtually no home entertainment stone unturned, and in most respects its performance is impressive – particularly when it comes to Freeview, recording and DVD playback. But sadly the system’s lacklustre sound quality is a real let-down and spoils what would have been a must-buy system.

The LG HRT403DA combines a 3.1 speaker system with a multi-format DVD recorder and Freeview+ certifi ed 160GB PVR.The latter is capable of analogue and digital reception but you can’t record two digital or analogue channels at once.
The recorder is slim, albeit with a broad footprint. A partly mirrored fascia sports a nice blue LED display and five operating buttons. The speakers are aesthetically pleasing, with the subwoofer getting its own display.

The subwoofer suffers from that unmistakable one-box system build quality, with a slightly plasticky feel to the front panel and a hollow sound when you tap it. But the gloss black finish, helpful LED readout and nifty controls (including a volume dial that you spin round with your finger) at least make it easy on the eye. The speakers also boast an effective combination of gloss black with silver trim, and the spring-clip terminals are neatly hidden underneath the stand.

Select the highest quality XP mode and recordings prove faithful, too. To access the pause/rewind feature, you need first to press the ‘Time Shift’ button and you then have an icon on screen at all times.
Switch to DVD and this set up is capable of 1080p video via HDMI. Watching the average Babylon A.D. the picture is decent, with fine insight, solid black levels and smooth, stable motion. It’s good, if not mind-blowingly so.
