Hard drive-based DVRs have the ability to create crazy TV people out of ordinary citizens, yet that trend will only continue, thanks to the proliferation of products like this LG TV making it easy to treat old episodes of Chips the way a hamster treats sunflowers. Last year the company introduced a plasma with a built-in hard drive. This year the company offers a
brace of LCD TV similarly outfitted. This one,a 42-inch, houses a 160GB hard drive.
Anyway, while the hard drive is the heart of the model, it’s also a respectable high definition TV. In addition to the now required ASTC digital tuner, this model also includes a CableCARD input so you can forgo the usual digital set-top-box and rely on the TV’s own on-screen guide: Gemstar’s TV Guide On Screen.
Built-in HDTV Digital Video Recorder (DVR)
Record from cable or antenna to a built-in 160 GB hard disk drive with
TV Guide On Screen® interactive program guide.
LG’s Exclusive XD EngineTM
Six distinct processes contribute to picture improvement. LG’s XD Engine takes the low resolution of analog signals to near HD levels by improving brightness, contrast, detail and enhancing color as well as reducing signal noise. This total solution results in cinema-like high resolution images.
Super IPS Technology
Reduces common distortion and blurring caused by fast motion video and also provides one of the industry’s widest viewing angles (178˚).

The LG 42LBDR’s claim to fame is its built-in DVR. The 160GB hard disk can record up to 15 hours of HD or 66 hours of standard-def programming, which is about half what you’ll get with the latest satellite DVRs and the TiVo Series 3. It can always record everything you’re watching, allowing you to rewind up to an hour into the past, and it lets you to pause and rewind live TV as well as fast-forward up to live time. There are four speeds of rewind and fast-forward, and we were pleased to note that LG included an option missing from many stand-alone DVRs: a forward skip, which in this case instantly moves ahead 20 seconds. It makes skipping through commercial breaks a breeze.

The 42LB1DR’s DVR has a capacity of 160GB, which is enough to store up to 15 hours of HD content or 66 hours of standard programming. While this may sound like a lot, it may not be sufficient if you are a serious TV fan. With the help of the TV Guide On Screen program guide, you can schedule to record shows in advance. In addition, the 42LB1DR has the usual DVR abilities that allow you to pause live TV and replay a missed line of dialogue or great play.
