Philips 42PF9631D.jpgPhilips 42PF9631D has been released by the Dutch company somewhere in June and has since been making it’s way to many homes throughout America. So, what’s so special with this unit?

Firstly, this Philips 42PF9631D has a special Ambilight feature designed to improve picture quality and ease eyestrain. Secondly, it’ also user friendly enough up to the stage that it allows you to download new firmware versions into a memory stick from the Philips website, and then feeds it into the TV through an easily accessible USB port.

It’s picture quality is good, even without the Ambilight feature turned on and the design is more sophisticated than most tv maker’s. With lighted remote and easily accessible input-outputs, the Philips 42PF9631D stands out from the rest of 42 inch HDTVs we’ve seen.

It comes with a HDTV tuner and 2 HDMI input, much to our relief as a lot of tv makers still believe than one HDMI input is enough for all of us.

* Pixel Plus 2 HD and Ambilight 2 for better viewing

Reviews by CNET:
“The Philips 42PF9631D is among the company’s least expensive Ambilight-equipped televisions yet, and since it costs about the same as other name-brand 42-inch plasmas, you’re not paying any more for the ‘lights–and you can turn them off. This HDTV has a solid feature set otherwise, and its distinctive style certainly increases its appeal. Testing revealed solid black-level performance and color that was a mixed bag, although we did notice a couple picture-quality issues that don’t plague other most plasmas or LCDs we’ve reviewed this year. That said, the image on the 42PF9631D will be perfectly fine for most viewers, and the rest of the package–especially the price–keeps it competitive.”

PCWorld Review:
“Our test jurors found the 42PF9631D’s performance pleasing on DVD and standard-definition content, but we particularly liked its high-definition TV performance for its nice balance. This Philips model also stood out in our bright lights test, in which it led the pack for retaining its color and contrast well under bright lights. We did not test this model with its Ambilight feature enabled. ”

TrustedReview’s Review:
” Comparing this Philips plasma set with the brand’s similarly sized LCD TVs, we’d probably be inclined to go for the LCDs. However, that’s certainly not meant to imply that you should always choose LCD over plasma, for there are a number of plasma alternatives out there able to give LCD a much, much better run for its money than this Philips effort can.”
