The VO47LF is a monster, along with the black, non-swivel stand, at 77.5 pounds. The dual textured bezel creates a frame within a frame around the screen – similar to a double matte around a photo. The TV is furnished in a glossy piano black color with its outer frame in a cross-hatched matte black. The effect is understated and elegant, but almost subverted by the shiny gold “1080P FULL HD” label ingrained into the lower right corner of the bezel.

The connection panel on the back contains 4 HDMI inputs for the strongVizio TV/strong.nbsp; You can also run audio out of the TV with the help of an SPDIF (optical) digital audio out and a stereo pair of RCA analog audio outs. Surfing from analog to digital channels is easier through tuner settings. What’s more, as the tuner system is also clear QAM compatible, you can attach your cable TV signal directly into the RF connector and tune in unscrambled cable stations.

The good news is that fiddling with the input plugs of various devices and color set-ups are no longer necessary. The bad news is that switching between your DVD player, cable connection, and VCR still requires regular input changes. A button on the VO47LF’s remote control allows you to chose which appliance you want to use from a list-even the inactive sources-and must be bypassed every time. The Vizio remote has buttons can let you access different input types despite having indirect button commands.

One design flaw is that all of the VO47LF’s inputs are on the back, facing downward, which makes them hard to access. After getting everything plugged in and turning on the TV, you can bring up the small on-screen menu with its hard-to-read blue-on-blue text. As you make necessary adjustments, you’ll encounter little annoyances such as a slider bar for setting the tint that doesn’t show the colors you’re going between.

The set’s twin built-in 10 watt speakers offer reasonable audio clarity, but they failed to come close to delivering the punch you’d expect with HDTV content. Considering the price of this model, you should have a few dollars left over to buy a dedicated home theater surround sound system.

As with many LCDs, the Vizio’s performance falls off if you move off-angle from the sweet spot, at a rate that’s more noticeable than many other LCDs we’ve seen. The darker areas of the image wash out, and from extreme angles a characteristic reddish tinge sets in. On the flipside we were impressed by the uniformity of the VO47LF’s picture across the screen, which remained solid except for the extreme upper-left corner, which looked a bit brighter than the rest in the darkest scenes.
