A new era of flat-panel HDTVs has begun. Sure, you go crazy for the magnificence of detail, color, and smoothness offered by the UT42X902’s 1920 x 1080p panel — offering the highest resolution available — but you also dig the way a flat-panel HDTV accents and opens up your living room. The key word in “flat panel” is “flat”, and Hitachi’s X902 Series sets a new standard for flat panel profiles. An Ultrathin 1.5″ panel is made possible by an advanced External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp (EEFL) that not only allows for a thinner panel design that takes up even less space mounted on your living room wall, but also delivers extended panel life, high-efficiency operation, and more flexible color accuracy.

The UT42X902’s setup menu has a solid but not extensive amount of picture adjustments. The essentials are here: three picture modes (dynamic, natural, and cinema), three color-temperature options (cool, normal, and warm), an adjustable backlight, a basic 3D color-management setting, and three types of noise reduction (digital, MPEG, and cross color). White balance controls are directly accessible through the setup menu, so you can fine-tune the color temperature.

The digital amplifier produces exceptionally clear sound. The speakers located at the left and right sides of the bottom of the monitor are Hitachi’s newly developed fully enclosed-type speakers, which are high quality and slim enough to fit the 1.5-inch depth of the display. The three sound modes allow consumers to select the most suitable type of audio effect depending on the contents – “clear voice” to pick up human voices clearly, “surround” for natural, clear three-dimensional sound and “bass boost” for the optimum bass sound depending on the input signal.

As expected from a Director’s Series model, the set features the Anti-Judder Reel120 technology to offer a smoother transition for film content. For video content, motion interpolation is used to display 120 images per second. All this means that the set provides a smooth picture even with fast-moving action sequences. HD content sources look simply fantastic on this 42-inch HDTV, and the set does a very good job with standard definition content as well. It won’t fool anyone into thinking that an older TV show is in HD, but we were pleased with the overall results.
