JVC included a CableCard slot that is ATSC/QAM compatible and digital cable ready. JVC uses what they call the 5th generation D.I.S.T. 1080p (Digital Image Scaling Technology) with GENESSA picture processing. Further improving image quality is auto VNR and natural Cinema 3:2 pull down.

Five video status modes are programmed into the set allowing you to change the image settings for brightness and more to suit your tastes and your viewing environment. Connectivity on the JVC I’Art LT-46FN97 is robust with dual HDMI/HDCP inputs, dual IEEE 1394 FireWire connections, dual auto sensing component video inputs, two S-Video inputs and an RF input.

One limitation of the Smart Input is that it does not include either of the digital video (HDMI) connections in its input recognition set. Another hookup option, and the one I used for most of this review, is to use one of the new AV receivers or pre pros that converts all incoming source inputs to HDMI. I used a Denon AVR-4306 receiver (review in progress) connected to three different sources: an early standard definition ReplayTV tuner/DVR box via composite video, an HD cable box/DVR via component, and DVD/HD DVD players over HDMI. This setup required only a single HDMI run from the receiver to the JVC, with all the video format conversion and switching (but no scaling or deinterlacing) performed by the receiver. While much of my viewing was done this way, I also watched DVD and HD DVD connected directly to the set to insure the quality of the Denon’s switching, which appeared to be pristine.

The 1394 in/outs are not always common on HDTVs and we were glad to see them because these FireWire connections are a convenient way to view DV camera footage. JVC advertises a nifty iLink control for DV cameras and devices connected through their 1394. But when we tried to use this iLink feature with a Sony camera, we discovered that it only worked with JVC brands, which makes it more of an irritation than an attraction.

In its packaging, JVC does provide a little 2 way splitter with RF cables into which you can feed your over the air antenna signal. Then one cable out of the splitter attaches to the RF plug that routes the signal to the NTSC tuner (for analog channels) and the other cable hooks to the RF plug going to the ATSC tuner (for digital channels). Since the tuner system is also Clear QAM compatible, you can connect your cable TV directly into the LT-46FN97 and tune in unscrambled cable stations.
