The 47LG90 is LG’s flagship LCD television for 2008. First rumored in 2007 and then shown at CES 2008 the LG90 uses an array of 128 Light-Emmiting-Diodes (LEDs) to locally dim different parts of the TV for an improved contrast ratio, and lower power usage. Traditional LCD tvs use one backlight for the entire picture meaning that any changes to the brightness of the backlight affects the entire image. Local dimming allows the system to reduce the backlight on parts of the screen that have darker content and turn the brightness up on brighter areas of the image. Being the flagship model the 47LG90 contains many of the same features as the premium LG70 series including a 1080p native resolution and a 120Hz mode. Note: The 47LG90 was previously known as the 47LG75.

Equipped with a typical side-and-rear input panel layout, the 47LG90 provides a total of four HDMI ports (one side), two component video inputs, VGA, and an RF input. Unusual for HDTVs, the 47LG90′s audio outputs include both optical and coaxial digital connections. Rarer still was the TV’s ability to pass 5.1 Dolby Digital audio from all connected sources to a compatible A/V receiver—the Samsung LN46A850′s optical audio output would pass multi-channel audio only from programming received via its broadcast TV tuner. The 47LG90 also features a serial control port for use with home theater automation products, and a side-mounted USB port is compatible with flash storage devices containing MP3 and JPEG multimedia files.

First off, it’s worth noting that each of the three sets use a technology colloquially called “local dimming,” where the individual LEDs behind the screen can be dimmed or turned off as needed. It’s this technology that adds some weight to each company’s claim of a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio (a nice round number, no?) When part of the screen goes dark and another is bright, standard fluorescent LCD backlights must rely on the LCD panel itself to block out the light and create dark areas. The result is the less-than-stellar black-level performance for which many LCDs have been noted.

LG’s 2008 line of TVs include a unique invisible speaker system, tuned by renowned audio expert, Mr. Mark Levinson. Speakers are embedded in strategic spots behind the front cabinet and use minute vibrations to turn the entire front bezel into the speaker system. The result is a clean, polished look, and enhanced audio by increasing the “sweet spot”, giving a wider and richer sound field.
Clear Voice Technology automatically enhances and amplifies the sound of human voice frequency range to help keep dialogue audible when background noise swells.

The core of this display is XD engine, that is one of the canny image enhancement techniques for cleansing the video inputs and producing immaculate images with supreme quality. XD engine features pixel works that studies each pixel in every frames to render good quality images, and real cinema that helps to render movie images in 24fps. The XD engine also consist of noise buster, super detailer, base co-ordinator and true colours. The pixel response time offered by LG 47LG90 Full HD LCD TV is 5ms, which is short enough to nip the image lags in the bud. Multi-lingual on-screen menu of this display is very simple and user-friendly. Colour temperature control is incorporated in this screen along with JPEG photo playback, video noise reduction, 5:5 pull down compensation, XD engine and 3:2 pull down compensation.
