Coming from a company known more for its plasma HDTVs, the Panasonic TC-32LX85 is a pleasant surprise in the 32-inch LCD category. Attractively designed and well appointed with generous connectivity, it is also a good performer overall, although by no means perfect. I was particularly impressed with the set’s color accuracy, which is something I really don’t expect from entry-level displays. Compared with the competition, the LC-32LX85 represents a compelling value in small LCD screens when you consider its performance characteristics.

And speaking of less inconvenience, check out Panasonic’s VIERA Link. You can operate (through HDMI connections) all your home theater components by pressing one button on the TV remote (which is included!). An HDMI cable carries not only digital video and audio signals, but control signals, too. For example, use your VIERA remote to control a recording operation with your DVD recorder or to start and stop playback of scenes from a video camera. With VIERA, extra ease and convenience are part of the entertainment package.

The TC-32LX85′s 32″ screen has 1366 x 768 densely packed pixels, for images that are wonderfully sharp and detailed. All LCD screens look bright and colorful when you’re sitting directly in front of them, but some dim quickly as you move off axis. Panasonic’s “IPS” (In-Plane Switching) screen technology helps maintain consistent color and contrast at wider viewing angles.

The TC-32LX85 is even GalleryPlayer compatible and includes a side SD memory card slot, so you can transform this set into your own private art gallery for those occasions when you’re bored if TV but still want to show off this set. This affordably priced model offers a nondescript, but still attractive case design with a thin bezel. Below the screen is this set’s speaker bar, which is nicely hidden while not detracting from the audio quality. The twin 10-watt speakers manage to produce very robust sound, and we found the volume to be more than adequate for a set this size for sports, TV, movie and even games. The simulated surround sound doesn’t really match a true home theater system, but for a smaller space the built-in speakers are quite sufficient.
