The native resolution of the PRO-940HD is 1024×768. While this is short of the minimum 1280×720 that we consider full high-definition, technically the Pioneer qualifies. CEA (Consumer Electronics Association, the industry body that, among other things, runs the annual CES) does not include horizontal resolution in its definition of high-def. If a set can produce 720p vertical pixels, minimum, on a 16:9 screen, the CEA says it may be classified as high-definition.

The NTSC/ATSC tuner is truly integrated to the extent that you hook up your antenna and the tuner scans the digital and analog signals together and builds a comprehensive list of both digital and analog channels. Reducing reflected light is critical to producing accurate color values. In the PRO940HD, Pioneer has eliminated one layer of internal glass by instead using a new First Surface PRO Pure Color Filter. This optical-grade filter is actually bonded directly to the plasma glass, eliminating refracted light. This results in sharper, more accurate color images even in a brightly lit room. Another way the PRO940HD creates brighter, truer colors is its Deep Encased Cell Structure, which isolates each plasma cell in its own four-walled housing. This allows the plamsa to use more phosphor in each cell without allowing light — and color — to escape into neighboring cells. It’s more efficient, but more importantly, it creates brighter images and truer colors.
