  • Screen size
    This flat-panel LCD television has a 40? screen, measured diagonally from corner to corner. This screen size is perfect for viewing from 5.3? to 10.5? away.

  • Resolution
    A 1080p resolution means that this television has 1080 rows of pixels vertically. The more pixels a TV has, the clearer the images it can produce. The p stands for progressive scan, which means the TV refreshes every row of pixels during each cycle to produce smoother motion and sharper picture than interlaced scan.

  • NTSC tuner
    A built-in NTSC tuner allows you to view standard analog television broadcasts through your television without a separate cable box.

  • ATSC tuner
    The ATSC tuner means that you can enjoy over-the-air digital channels and theater quality audio (with a separate HD antenna) without the need for a digital antenna.

  • QAM tuner

  • Aspect ratio

  • Contrast ratio
    Contrast ratio describes the difference between the darkest blacks and brightest whites a television is capable of producing. Since there is no industry standard for how contrast ratio is measured, it is only significant within a brand, not between brands. This television has a dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1.

    High-definition sources look spectacular on the LN40A550, and standard-definition sources look great too, thanks to Samsung’s powerful image processing that enhances contrast, detail, and white balance while reducing noise. Wide Color Enhancer optimizes hues, so colors look rich and vibrant, yet very natural. Samsung also improved their TVs’ contrast and black level performance. Dark scenes often look washed-out on LCDs when you turn down the room lights, but not on this model.

A fast 5 ms response rate produces smooth-motion scenes for sports and action movies, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1 makes for deep blacks and crisp lines (15,000:1 in 32-inch and 37-inch models).     If you are using a Blu-ray player, a receiver, or anything else that is capable of sending a high definition signal, don’t forget to purchase the right cables. Many people don’t realize what a significant difference the right cables make, and when they get their new high definition equipment home, they think the equipment itself is to blame when the picture or sound isn’t as good as it should be. This is because most components (Blu-ray, receivers, etc) don’t come with cables, so people often use whatever they have around the house, or buy cheap cables, thinking “it will do.”
