This stunning NEW Sharp LC-52XD1E is one of the very few LCD TV’s on the market to offer True 1080p HD resolution. Incorporating a 6.2M (sub) Pixel, 8th Generation LCD panel, this Aquos model displays 1080p progressive lines with amazing clarity and detail. Featuring Sharp’s unique Four Wave Backlight System (Blue, Green, Red and Crimson Red) to deliver deeper reds and transluscent colours such as skin tones, which historically has been difficult to reproduce; and incorporating a feature called TRUE D which cuts down on picture judder and noise; TrueD also enhances Contrast and Sharpness. The XD1E also features an integrated iDTV Freeview Tuner with an 8 Day EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). This top of the range, flagship model is for the ultimate Home Cinema enthusiast who wants a futureproof LCD TV for the next generation of HD viewing.

Where Sharp has been a little tight is in the connectivity options around the back. You can hook the screen up using a tidy, well concealed selection of choices, which include two SCARTs, component, VGA (which, thanks to an included adapter cable, can also handle high definition component) and two HDMI. We’d argue that the person looking to spend a couple of thousand pounds on a high definition screen is likely to need, at some point, at the very least three HDMIs, and it’s surprising that Sharp has been so reserved in its provision here.

With the 52XD1E also having a decent stab at remapping standard-def sources to its high-resolution panel, the only complaints we can raise are that occasionally the dynamic contrast feature can leave pictures a touch too dark for comfort, and that you can get even better motion handling and black levels (at least in terms of shadow detail portrayal) from a good 50-inch plasma.

Standard Definition (SD) pictures on the LC52XD1E highlight the shortcomings of the format rather than the panel itself, but there is no getting away from the fact that a screen this large is just not suited to SD sources. The Sharp LC52XD1E is better than most large LCD’s in this respect, but there is noticeable noise and dot crawl with SD output.
