The Sharp Aquos LC-52X20E is the largest in the new range of AQUOS X20E LCD TVs that include 42-inch and 46-inch variants, and it’s an impressively attractive beast replete with a host of advanced features.
Not least of these is the TV’s black screen and matching piano black lacquered finish to the slim line and modern design. The matching metal stand comes in the box and bolts quickly and easily into place on the base or you can wall mount the TV; all the ports on the reverse are recessed with manual controls (as opposed to the remote’s controls, more on which later) are also discreetly tidied away on the right edge of the set (from the front).

At 52in across, the 52X20E is currently the largest LCD TV on Sharp’s books - enough to ensure it’s hitting the ground running in TrustedReviews’ home cinema-loving opinion. Especially when we think back to the stunning standard of HD playback served up by the 46in Sharp LCD we tested, the LC-46LX2E.

If similar standards of HD quality can be attained by the 52X20E on its larger screen, then this could be one of our more pleasant afternoons in the test room.

24p (24 frame per second) mode is supported for true film frame rates, along with “dot by dot” mode which enables you to watch HD quality at the original speed and without and unsightly stretching. TrustedReviews said starting our tests of the Sharp LC46X20E with Blu-ray, we were for the most part very impressed by what the set can do with HD source material. The price wins the day with us, as we just can’t stop feeling that getting hold of 46 inches of always decent, sometimes outstanding HDTV pictures for under £730 really does look like an opportunity too good to pass up.

This hi-def triumvirate opens up the possibility of attaching an upscaling DVD player, a set-top box from Virgin or Sky, plus a PS3 or Xbox 360.

In a thoughtful touch, one of those HDMI’s is located side-on - perfect for a high definition games console.

In terms of connections, the 46X20E passes muster without exactly blowing us away. Which is to say that it manages three HDMIs built to the v1.3 specification, as well as a dedicated D-Sub PC port, an RS232 control jack for easy integration into a wider home cinema system, and a digital audio output. In an ideal world some sort of multimedia port – SD card slot, USB input – might have been nice, too. But the 46X20E’s lowly price makes this pretty easy to forgive and forget.
