The Sony Bravia KDL-40V5500 features four HDMI 1.3 inputs, one more than normal, allowing plenty of connections for future HD equipment. There is also an Ethernet port on the Sony KDL40V5500, which allows media streaming from networked PC’s via DLNA, and also Internet access and Applicast Widgets. A USB 2.0 port allows jpg, mp3 and even video file playback direct from a USB memory stick.

The KDL-40V5500’s solid clarity with motion helps it do a great job, too, of reproducing the glorious sharpness and texture of HD sources. The set’s Full HD resolution doubtless plays a part in this too, but so exceptionally clean and sharp are the 40V5500’s HD pictures that the new Bravia Engine 3 circuitry also has to be heavily involved, boding well for Sony’s other upcoming TVs for this year.

Actually, the new Bravia Engine update does a mighty fine job with standard definition too, making it look sharper but also cleaner than it did on previous Sony LCD TVs.

Color-temperature presets include Cool, Neutral, Warm 1, and Warm 2. Warm 2 proved closest to the 6,500K standard (see Performance for more). Otherwise, most of the set’s “picture enhancing” features actually harm picture quality and should be turned off for critical viewing. Black Corrector cuts brightness in large chunks and isn’t necessary if you set the brightness control properly. The same can be said of Contrast Enhancer, which decreases the detail in the picture. Clear White shifts the color temperature back toward blue and should also be left off.
