This results in four times the density for quality sources, such as DVD, satellite and digital camcorders. The CineMotion technology feature uses reverse 3-2 pull down technology, providing smoother picture movement when playing back movies or other video sources on film. Other features include the Steady Sound audio equalizer (for consistent output between programs and commercials), parental controls (V-chip), Favorites channel list, front AV Inputs for connecting camcorders or video game consoles,and an HDMI connection for uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TV and any HDMI-equipped audio/video component.

The design of the Sony KDF-E50A10 is compact and basic, although it has a little more pizzazz than last year’s entry-level 50-incher, the KDF-WE655. The screen is surrounded by a black bezel with a thin silver-gray border on the top, left, and right sides and a larger silver border on the bottom. An opening that runs the width of the television along the bottom (we were reminded of a jet fighter’s air intake) conceals a pair of speakers.

In most TVs, video signals are converted back and forth from digital to analog a number of times, causing signal degradation and poorer picture quality. Sony’s WEGA Engine™ System offers fully-digital signal processing for a crisper picture with virtually no noise or blurriness. Other picture enhancements include Cinema Black Pro, which strengthens black levels for an overall richer picture, and Advanced Iris, which adjusts the picture to compensate for dark TV scenes or bright room lighting.

In addition to the PC input, the KDF-E50A10 has two RF inputs for antenna and cable sources, three composite video inputs (including one on the side), one S-video input, three HD component video inputs (one side), and one HDMI digital-to-digital audio/video connection. The remote control is a universal model that can manage most associated devices using three direct-access buttons or the on-screen menu system.

The Sony KDF-E50A10 is equipped with a PC input, and it can be quite a thrill to play computer games on the big screen.
