The KDS-R50XBR1 has a built-in ATSC tuner that will receive over-the-air and cable High Definition signals without the need for a separate DTV set-top box. With its HD-compatible component video and HDMI inputs, the TV can also display programs in High Definition from high-end DVD players and set-top boxes. In addition, the TV also includes an NTSC tuner for analog broadcasts, and is CableCARD ready.

The KDS-R50XBR1 has three high-definition SXRD image panels, each with 1920 x 1080 pixels. Each panel has 2 million pixels, so there is no loss of detail. SXRD preserves every pixel of the source, and brings the full 1080 lines to the screen without interlacing, displaying the signal at 1080p. The resulting picture has incredible clarity and a smooth, filmlike quality.

The Sony WEGA television also includes HDMI technology for single-cable hook-up of digital sources.
• CableCARD Slot
The included CableCARD slot allows you to receive HDTV and standard-definition signals and eliminates the need for a clunky set-top box.

Thin, but powerful, the Sony KDS-R50XBR1 Grand WEGAâ„¢ SXRDâ„¢ Rear Projection HDTV is equipped with SXRD technology and offers a brilliant, colorful image pleasing to any pair of eyes. SXRD technology employs three Silicon X-tal Reflective Display panels, which aid in the response time of image changes and movement. Each one of these panels is associated to a primary color: red, blue or green. These panels combine their monochromatic colors into one creating a single, full color image that is displayed onto the screen via an energy-efficient high output lamp (RGB Image 1920 x 1080).

Digital displays (LCD, plasma, SXRD/LCoS, DLP) build images out of pixels, and the ability to produce smooth, clean motion depends on the display’s “pixel response time” (the time it takes for one pixel to switch from fully on to fully off). Sony’s current LCD-based Grand Wegas have a pixel response time of 12 milliseconds, which is generally considered excellent. SXRD image panels use a much thinner liquid crystal layer, which enables a lightning-fast response time of just 5 milliseconds. You might not think the human eye could detect a difference of a few milliseconds, but it really makes a difference in how believably a screen can display fast-motion material like sports. I never saw any trace of motion smearing even while watching college football on ESPN HD.
