Toshiba knows that the DTV transition is upon us, albeit a little delayed for now. The company is well enough aware that, just because broadcasters are sending out the TV signals digitally, this doesn’t mean everything they’re sending is high-definition. For this reason, the company has developed a new system called Super Resolution Technology, which is meant to process poor standard-definition TV into near-HDTV. The 42-inch LCD model 42XV545U uses SRT, among other features, to provide a clean and clear digital picture. The original list price at about $1,500 made this a pricy 42-inch TV, but current prices of around $1,000 or less make it a much easier buy.

Toshiba’s 42-inch, 120-Hz 42XV545U HDTV delivers solid image quality, finishing second overall in our performance tests, close behind the Vizio SV420XVT. Despite its high scores, however, I had a mixed reaction to this set. Contrast in the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl test (chapter 12 of the Blu-ray disc, with Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley marooned on the island) was excessive, and I didn’t like the yellowish cast of their faces. As for The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King sequence (chapter 22 of the DVD), though I rated it Good for brightness and contrast, its handling of dark areas of the mountain and cloak, and its detail in faces and clothing were only Fair. Faces appeared a bit red, too.

Toshiba employs a “wide color gamut” backlight to provide a 25% wider color range than typical LCDs. You’ll primarily notice deeper reds and greens. And while 8-bit color resolution is normal for LCD TVs, the 42XV545U uses a 10-bit panel, which quadruples the number of possible shades for each primary color (red, green, and blue). The bottom line is that the number of possible hues goes from millions to over a billion, for colors that are nuanced and natural.
