A high-gloss black case with silver trim gives the display an elegant look without going overboard. The panel sits atop a matching stand that doubles as a hub for a generous assortment of multimedia connections, including five USB ports (four upstream, one downstream), an 8-in-1 media card reader, audio-in and -out ports, and headphone and microphone jacks. The big news here is the inclusion of an iPod dock, which is situated in the center of the base and comes with adapters to fit virtually every iPod model on the market (according to ViewSonic, only the iPod shuffle, which uses a USB connection, can’t be docked on this monitor). Though it would be nice just to plug in an iPod and get instant music and video, that isn’t the case here.

The display has both DVI and analog video ports. When we connected the monitor using DVI, our Mac Pro recognized it correctly, and the monitor displayed its native 1,680-by-1,050 resolution automatically. The display looked a little washed out at its default settings, but calibration did improve its color performance. Unfortunately, calibration couldn’t alleviate its limited viewing angle. Color shifts are apparent pretty quickly, and the display loses contrast and brightness as you move your head left or right from the center. Text was legible, even at small point sizes. And colors, though not as vibrant as on other monitors we’ve seen, were fairly accurate as long as long as you sit directly in front of the screen.

With the release of the Viewsonic VX2245wm ViewDock ($455) monitor, LCD displays are the latest product category to become “iPod-ified”. The 22-inch widescreen display boasts an iPod dock built right into the base offering the promise of a simplified desktop along with its glossy black design. The idea of integrating an iPod dock into a monitor isn’t completely without merit, but don’t get ahead of yourself imagining what the ViewDock can do.

ClearMotivâ„¢ 5ms video response delivers blur-free games and crystal-clear music videos, movies and Internet content. Response time is the length of time (expressed in milliseconds),that it takes an LCD screen to go from gray-to-gray, an important factor in viewing moving images (movies, games, etc). The lower the response time (2ms, for example) the better the viewing experience.
