This LCD TV features the controversial 120Hz processing that Vizio calls Smooth Motion. As we’ve noted with other TVs with 120Hz processing it’s best not to use this feature when viewing film based content. Vizio lists dynamic contrast ratio at 50,000:1. It does not give a figure for native contrast ratio so this is sure to be a weakness of the TV since some manufacturers list dynamic contrast at 1M:1. Vizio has increased processing response time to 5ms with a 10-bit data input-panel. We’ll see how that response time measures in a true test of motion lag. This unit will not be available until January 2009 at a price of around $2000. One of the biggest questions we have is whether the TV has an anti glare screen and if so how much it decreases contrast and black levels – especially at angles.

The 5 HDMI inputs which carry both uncompressed high-def video content and uncompressed analog audio content provide lots of connectivity. Vizio has introduced some of very latest advance technology with SRS TruVolume and SRS TruSurround sound to bring you the best in sound quality. To attract the consumers, Vizio offers a soundbar and wireless subwoofer kit which acts as another addition to the 3 inch speakers. There aren’t many manufacturers doing this to date but you’ll probablys ee more and more of it.

The VF550XVT’s remote is a bit larger and heavier than we would like, and the balance isn’t great. That said it can work as a universal remote to control other parts of your home theatre system. The menu system is very good, providing both a simple interface at the first level and more advanced options hiding underneath. We were also very happy with the audio quality produced by that prominent speaker bar. It’s amongst the best we’ve heard from built-in speakers, albeit still not as good as a real surround sound setup.

A good selection of picture adjustments is on-hand, including a whopping nine fully adjustable picture modes. Four of these modes, Golf, Baseball, Basketball, and Football, serve to perpetuate the mistaken notion that picture settings can be optimized for particular sports. In case you’re wondering, we detected no discernable benefit to watching a Football game in said mode as opposed to, say, Golf mode, but it’s nice to have the extra adjustability afforded by four additional picture modes, regardless of their names. Unfortunately, none of the picture modes are independent per input.

With the Vizio VF550XVT we did run into an interesting issue, specifically related to the Contrast level. Contrast is used to adjust the way white are displayed, but since whites on a television are made up of a combination of red, green and blue lights it also effects the way those colors are displayed. In our calibration process we want to ensure that colors can be differentiated across the maximum range of intensities, which range from 0 to 255. We found that with the Vizio VF550XVT we were able to get a good range of whites at a much higher contrast level than we eventually calibrated at, but found problems with the range of colors available. We had to turn it down much lower (to 25) in order to get the maximum range of all the colors.

Frame interpolation creates new frames to insert between the actual frames in a video signal, calculating where moving objects should be in those new frames to smooth out the motion and sharpen the image. However, this process can introduce artifacts of its own. The VF550XVT provides two controls—Smooth Motion and Real Cinema—that determine the amount and type of interpolation, respectively, allowing you to balance the increased sharpness with any artifacts that might intrude.
