The Pioneer KURO PDP-5010FD and PDP-6010FD are both full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) having a 16:9 Wide-Screen Aspect Ratio. The only difference in specification between the PDP-5010FD and PDP-6010FD plasmas is the difference in screen sizes.Pioneer have placed emphasis on black through all their marketing literature for their KURO plasma full definition TVs. KURO means black in Japanese,. Pioneers’ contention is that black gives each color greater definition, additional shades, more depth and the sharpest details.

Let’s begin with Panasonic, their Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ700U Plasma TV requires no special mentioning. The fame and popularity of this model have spread all over the country. With a large screen size of 50” it facilitates widescreen and effective viewing. The plasma technology couldn’t get better on a wide screen. To equip this wide screen the unit should be constructed in such a complimenting manner. The dimensions are well set with the measurement of the unit as (W) 50 in x (D) 5.5 in x (H) 31.6 in, and it weighs 105.8 lbs.

Pioneer’s remote control has a clean layout and a glow-in-the-dark keypad. A full set of direct input keys is located at the remote’s top; you can’t rename inputs with onscreen tags such as DVD or Cable, however. Located below the input keys are buttons to toggle through picture presets and display (aspect ratio) modes. The choices include a Dot-by-Dot setting that displays 1080i/p signals with no scaling or overscan, along with various stretch and zoom modes.

With a screen as large as this, high resolution becomes more important because it is more possible to view each pixel from a distance. The PDP-5010FD is a native 1080p display, meaning it has a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the highest standard available. The black levels on plasma screens are generally superb and this unit is no exception, with blacks that are an intense, deep black and a picture that has very high contrast as a result.

Up conversion from 480i and 480p: Up conversion using our trusty, old and poorly produced Risky Business DVD was very good. There was slight grain and background noise but from 14 feet it was almost unnoticeable. There is a slight flicker when viewing the plasma from up close. The realism was excellent and I thought the Pioneer’s video chip sets cleaned up the picture nicely while staying true to the original content. Reds really popped, and this was a facet of the original production.

The PDP-5010FD offers an impressive collection of connectivity options, starting with four HDMI 1.3 inputs. There are also two component video inputs, an S-video input, three composite video inputs and a PC input. This set has a USB port for viewing digital photos, and it is Home Gallery-compatible. The outputs include a stereo analog monitor output as well an optical digital audio output, which is useful when you have multiple HDMI-connected components and only need one digital audio link to your surround-sound receiver. The connectivity options are rounded out by a subwoofer pre-amp output and a headphone jack.
