Samsung’s FP-T5084 represents the company’s opening foray into the jungle of 1080p-resolution plasma, and it’s a solid first effort. Compared with the company’s earlier, less expensive HP-T5064, a lower-resolution 50-inch plasma, the FP-T5084 looks cooler and performs a bit better, although not cooler and better enough to earn a higher overall rating. You might expect the 1080p resolution to mean a sharper picture, but as with all 50-inch HDTVs we’ve tested, its benefits on the FP-T5084 are difficult to discern. That doesn’t prevent this plasma from competing well against the heavy-hitters in the category, including Panasonic and, to a lesser extent, Pioneer.

The FP-T5084 is Energy Star-compliant and reduces energy consumption up to 25 percent compared to other similar-sized plasma HDTVs. Part of this reduction comes from Samsung’s FilterBright technology, which deploys an antiglare filter to reduce (but unfortunately not eliminate) glare from outside light sources. Power consumption is further moderated by the FP-T5084′s power save mode. A blue eye in the front-bottom bezel reads the ambient light in your viewing room and adjusts the set to one of three brightness modes, which is more efficient for both viewing and energy consump.

The FPT5084 is 1080p, meaning that it can display resolution up to 1920 x 1080. It does so while maintaining a good contrast ratio of 15,000:1 and a very bright screen. The astonishingly good brightness is achieved by the Ultra FilterBright which blocks the reflection on the screen caused by any source of light (sun, lamp etc). The quality of the picture is better than in some other plasmas, the cause of this is the DNIe technology which uses special algorithms to change and enhance the image before it is displayed on the screen (reduce noise, increase contrast), it results in an overall good image even for the standard TV.

The Samsung FPT5084 HDTV is sleek and visually pleasing. Samsung has placed the speakers (hidden) to the side of the 50 inch screen, as opposed to the bottom. This makes the panel shorter and wider, which, in turn, makes it easier on the eyes. The sides of the TV also consist of chrome colored strips, which curve towards the outside of the TV and conceal the hidden speakers. The top and bottom frame of the Samsung FPT5084 is thin for a plasma of 50 inches. The bottom panel includes Samsung’s logo and blue light. However, this particular feature can be turned off.

You also get Samsung’s DNIe (Digital Natural Image engine), which combines noise reduction, colour enhancement, and motion processing to make pictures look sharper. With DNIe enabled, images did look a bit sharper, brighter, and more colour-saturated – unnaturally so, we thought. In the Blu-ray version of Phantom of the Opera, we preferred the TV’s presets, such as the default Standard and Movie modes.

The FP-T5084 offers a slew of adjustable settings, including RGB gain and offset controls in the White Balance section of the OSD menu (for fine color temperature controls), and separate pink, green, blue, and white settings in My Color Control.
