Offering a rich feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung HPT4254 42-inch 720p plasma TV uses the company’s latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC–it’s perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery).

The set is attractive in an understated sort of way–it’s sleek without looking stark. The screen actually blends into the mirror piano black bezel and this gives it a very pleasing appearance. As with the rest of Samsung’s plasma line, this set is attractive whether it is off or on.

Of course you’ll really appreciate the set in the on position, and this set does an admirable job with HD content. It features a native resolution of 1,024×720 and can handle 720p HD content with ease; 1080i and 1080p source material is scaled accordingly. We were very pleased with the way this set presents standard definition content as well.

Here’s a little secret: television and film were not created equal. Film is shot at 24 frames per second. And just about every movie disc you can buy is encoded at that speed. But television programming runs at 30 frames per second, and most TVs conform to that standard. When you watch a DVD on your TV, fitting that 24-frame content onto a 30-frame screen isn’t a seamless process. You can’t divide 24 by 30 evenly so video engineers fill in the gaps by placing one frame on the screen three times and the next one after that two times, which can cause stutter and other visual artifacts.

The HP-T4254 receives both analog and digital over-the-air broadcasts (antenna required). With this HDTV in your system, you’ll no longer need to worry about the coming analog signal shutoff in 2009. Also, a “QAM” tuner allows cable TV subscribers to tune in most unscrambled channels without using a set-top box.
