As to be expected with more affordable plasma models, the Samsung PN42A450 features a native resolution of 1,024×768 and handles 720p HD content with ease, while 1080i and 1080p source material is scaled accordingly. HD content from cable and satellite does looks sharp and clear, and this model tackles standard definition with ease. The 42-inch screen size doesn’t blow up the standard definition content to extreme sizes, of course, but this provides a better picture than you’d get with a larger-sized set. The crisp picture can also be credited to Samsung’s DNIe technology, which further enhances the digital image to generate a crystal-clear picture that captures finite detail on video content.

Innovative motion-estimated technology multi-tones the bright and dark parts on each angle of the line. Even in fast-action scenes, SAMSUNG’s Silhouette Editor adjusts toning so faces appear natural and free of distortion.

HDTV sets now routinely have at least one HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) input, and usually two, three, or four. An HDMI connection carries digital video and, in many cases, audio from HD cable and satellite receivers, Blu-ray Disc players, and some DVD players and game consoles to the TV over a single cable. Because of their convenience and quality, HDMI connections, when they are available, are generally preferable to other types. Normally an HDTV set will also have two, or possibly three, component-video inputs as well. You can also expect your TV to have component video as well as one or two standard three-wire A/V inputs (composite video plus stereo audio), and one or two RF inputs for direct antenna or cable-TV input.

Many TVs these days come with a power-saver mode that’s designed to cut down the power consumption. Performance of this mode varies from model to model, with the effect sometimes being drastic and other times providing only a slight savings. The only downside is that the power-saver mode usually makes the TV less bright, but we’ve found that sometimes this has a beneficial effect on the image quality, especially with the room lights turned off, in which case it’s a win-win situation.
