Sherwood BDP-5003 Blu-ray Player Review

Sponsors:

Sherwood’s BDP-5003 Blu-ray player unleashes the potential of home theaters with support for sublime high definition 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video (24 or 60 Hz) and lossless high definition Dolby® TrueHD and Dolby® Digital Plus audio (compatible home theater receiver required), all transmitted over HDMI v1.3. Still building your Blu-ray movie library? Even DVDs benefit from the BDP-5003s ability to upconvert them to 720p, 1080i, and 1080p via HDMI. When the movies over, the show’s not over. An extended 4-20,000 Hz frequency response serves standard and compressed audio CDs well, as does an ultra-low 0.003% THD standard and a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB. Component video output is limited to 480p. HDMI cable not included.

The BDP-5003 is Sherwood’s first venture into Blu-ray Disc player territory. Features of the BDP-5003 include playback of Blu-ray Discs at full 1080p resolution, bitstream output for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD via its HDMI 1.3a output, and playback compatibility with standard DVDs, most recordable DVD formats, CDs, and CD-Rs/RWs. Another bonus is that standard DVDs are upscaled up to 1080p via the HDMI output. The BDP-5003 adheres to Profile 1.1 (Bonus View) specifications, but does not have an Ethernet connection or provisions to add memory capacity that is required for Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) upgradability.

The BDP-5003 is an attractive piece of kit, though it bears a striking resemblance to some Samsung Blu-ray players currently out there today. Measuring in at roughly the same size and shape as most other players, notably the Sony BDP-S350, the BDP-5003 looks more upscale than its asking price, though when you pick it up and/or use the remote, it’s evident that this is a budget player. The front panel is smooth, almost mirror-like, with a few key manual controls like play, stop, chapter skip and open. All of these glow a pale blue, which is pleasing to the eye and allow the controls and small display window to be read from quite an impressive distance.

The player is reasonably responsive, loading a Blu-ray disc in a decent but unexceptional 76 seconds. It could pause the playback almost immediately–as good or better than most–and we saw only a very slight lag when skipping chapters.

The design of the BDP-5003 is fairly attractive–it’s glossy black, with physical buttons at the right, one each for Play, Stop, Previous Chapter, and Next Chapter. The on-screen menus, however, are far less attractive. Even worse, the menus are unintuitive: They offer no explanations, and an action that you’d expect to show you an option instead selects it.

The design of this disc player is one that has style and it is very compact. That means it does not take up a lot of space. It will be able to fit in a smaller space in your home entertainment center. It also had front panel controls that have plenty of illumination. This disc player is different than some of the others on the market because their lights are blue. This helps them to be set apart from others, even if the room you are in is dark.

Audio is where this player may fall short for some people. As mentioned previously, the only dedicated audio outputs are analog stereo and digital coaxial or optical. That means that if you want to hear either Dobly Tru HD or DTS-HD audio tracks you need to connect it via HDMI to a surround sound receiver that can decode those formats. If you’re fine with plain-Jane Dolby Digital or DTS, then the digital outputs will work too.
