This 47-inch LCD has a 1920 x 1080 resolution and an 8-millisecond response time. Despite this product’s lower price tag, it has a very generous input panel that includes four HDMI, two component video, and one PC input, as well as a single RF input to access the internal ATSC, NTSC, and Clear-QAM tuners. The HDMI inputs accept 1080p/60 but not 1080p/24. Vizio includes a lot of picture-in-picture options and a scaled-down program guide for the internal tuners. The TV does not include any additional media ports, such as USB or a card reader.

The GV47LF’s well-endowed back panel sports four HDMI inputs that accept 1080p/60 (but not 1080p/24), plus two component video and one PC input that are also HD-capable. The menu includes the standard assortment of LCD picture adjustments, including several preset picture modes and color-temperature settings, plus an adjustable backlight to tailor the image’s overall light output to suit your viewing environment. It also offers advanced white-balance controls, which isn’t a given at this price point.

The Advanced Picture Adjust menu is selected from the main screen above, and it is shown below. It has Digital Noise Reduction, Black Level Extender, White Peak Limiter, CTI (Color Transient Intensity – adjusts for color errors in fast moving scenes), Flesh Tone (enhances skin), Dynamic Backlight, and Adaptive Luma. All of these things are basically DSP for enhancing the picture. Basically, you just turn them on and off to see if you like the effect. If you like it, leave it on.

The GV47LF is a full HD TV set, which means that it supports 1080p-grade resolution, but also the lower 480i (SDTV), 480P (EDTV), 720P (HDTV) and 1080i (HDTV). It also supports various PC resolutions (640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1920 x 1080) via the appropriate interfaces. And since we’ve reached this particular subject, it’s interesting to note that the VIZIO Gallevia GV47LF provides a full range of input options, including here RF, HDMI with HDCP, Analog Stereo Audio for HDMI Inputs, Component YPbPr plus Stereo Audio, Composite Video, S-Video plus Stereo Audio, Computer RGB plus Stereo Audio and a service port. There are also some useful outputs, namely an analog audio interface, a 5.1 SPDIF Digital Optical Audio connector and a headphone jack.

If you’re connecting a computer, you’ll probably be disappointed that the VGA input maxes out at 1,360×768 resolution (which did look pretty good) instead of the full 1,920×1,080. We did connect a PC via HDMI and got 1,920×1,080 resolution, but the image didn’t look as sharp as the 1,360×768 version. Again, we believe this has to do with the lack of a dot-by-dot mode, although perhaps people playing with picture settings, either in the Vizio or in the video card’s drivers, can achieve a better-looking higher-resolution computer image. All-in-all, shoppers looking for a big computer monitor would be better served by the Westinghouse LVM-47w1.

The glowing “Vizio” in the center of the bottom bezel was handled well. It dims to a pale white after a few seconds of brightness when you turn the television on. When the television is off, the text glows orange. I probably would rather a more basic color, like dark blue, but that’s nitpicking. They are sticking with one of their branding colors, Vizio orange, which I completely understand. The glowing symbol is not gaudy or dominating in the least. The orange glow is barely visible in normal lighting; you wouldn’t notice without looking for it. It only stands out in a dark room.
