Inputs are important in a plasma TV, and this set comes close to giving you what you’re likely to want. It includes many of the standard inputs (composite, component, and S-Video) but forgoes the expected HDMI input. Almost all plasma TVs of this size and resolution (1024-by-768 native) include HDMI for accepting high-definition content; it’s rather a surprise to see one without it. However, the A42HD84 does include DVI input, which makes it a natural match for a PC.

The A42HD84′s feet–it doesn’t have a single pedestal stand, necessitating a tabletop at least 28 inches wide–are finished in a high-gloss black that matches the bezel around the screen. We appreciate the set’s compact dimensions, which are smaller than the Vizio P42HDTV’s but 1.5 inches wider than the Panasonic TH-42PX60U’s. Overall, including those feet, the unit measures 41.7 by 29.5 by 9.8 inches, and the panel itself is 3.5 inches.

HDTV (high definition television) is a television display technology that provides picture quality similar to 35 mm movies with sound quality similar to that of today’s compact disc. Some television stations have begun transmitting HDTV broadcasts to users on a limited number of channels. You’ll be able to watch HD content in clear, crisp detail thanks to the A42HD84.

With its ease of use, so-so TV image quality and DVI input, the A42HD84 seems better suited to a conference room than to a living room. Its image quality is more than good enough for PowerPoint, and it would work just fine for watching news or a training video. If you want to settle down for an evening of inexpensive TV entertainment though, you’d be better served by Vizio’s P42HDTV, which delivers better TV and DVD viewing for almost the same price.
