The nature of HD1080 makes it difficult to evaluate the P42H401’s performance using our standard test discs. In the area of detail, our Video Essentials resolution pattern shows that the P42H401 measures out to the limits with DVD, but it was difficult to get a firm estimate for 720p and 1080i (see our measurements text). Sitting about 7.5 feet from the screen, I was generally satisfied with the detail I saw in all sources: SDTV, DVD, HDTV, and high-definition DVD. Facial close-ups in the Training Day HD DVD revealed a solid amount of fine detail.

With the PictureMaster HD IV processor, all video inputs are scaled to match the native resolution of the unit to ensure a detailed picture no matter the source. For a better picture, the processor also performs noise reduction and other picture enhancements, such as dynamic contrast and histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, and the capability for 16-bit color. Users can select between four HD and six SD aspect modes, and three preset color temperatures.

With its clean black bezel and titanium-gray trim, the P42H401 certainly looks a step up from budget plasma displays. Stereo speakers are discreetly located below the screen, but while the 20-watt output is adequate, it lacks the punch that this screen deserves. For this reason, we’d highly recommend connecting the P42H401 to a home theater receiver and surround sound speaker system. Hitachi has replaced the previous swivel base with a fixed tabletop stand that adds about 2-1/2 inches to the overall height of the monitor and nearly 11 inches to the depth. A bracket is available as an optional accessory for mounting the P42H401 to the wall.
