Pioneer Kuro models have been the best plasma TV models on the market for quite a while. They have the deepest black levels you can see in a plasma TV or any other type of HDTV for that matter. The side effect of having such deep black levels is a positive one: you get great contrast ratio and color reproduction and that means a superb picture. However, because they are the best they cost more money than other plasma TV models. Considering the quality it is worth it though.

As the flagship plasma TV for Pioneer’s lineup, the Kuro is an ultra-elite, high-definition flat-screen that will probably only appeal to consumers who are willing to pay the price of admission. The brave bottomless-pocket few who are not turned away by Kuro’s sticker shock will find a beautiful TV, complete with one PC and four HDMI inputs, top picture quality and a balanced, all-around product. The Kuro’s MSRP rightfully leaves it open to nitpicking, and the slight color and control issues are warranted, but ultimately they don’t completely detract from an otherwise stunning television.

Four independent High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.3 inputs with HDMI-CEC control and the ability to accept 1080p 24/60Hz signals assure that the best video signal is always sent from the source (HDTV signal, DVD player) to the PDP6020FD’s display. HDMI does this by allowing uncompressed video and multi-channel audio data to be input directly to the display device through a single cable. There’s also a USB input and a PC input to use your PDP5020FD as a computer monitor, an optical digital audio output, and even a subwoofer output.

The menu system underwent an even more thorough overhaul. Instead of overlaying the menu atop the picture, as nearly every other HDTV does, the Pioneer shrinks the live TV image into a small window in the middle-left sector, and fills the remainder of the screen with menu text, onscreen explanations, and guide icons on a black background. We liked the new menus, which are exceedingly easy to read, and appreciated the fact that during picture adjustments the standard overlay arrangement returns, so you can see the effects of your adjustments. We also appreciated the Tools menu, which provided easy access to many of the most-used functions.
