The Pioneer PDP-436SXE is one of the coolest looking TV’s on the planet. High gloss piano black with curved edges and silver finishing. The speakers are hidden underneath the screen and if you weren’t looking for them you would never know they where there. The Pioneer makes the Panasonic Viera and the Sony Bravia look like they got dressed in the dark.

The connections on the back are adequate, there is the all important HDMI Input and the usual S-Video and Composite Input along with 3 Scart Inputs. However, we were a little bit disappointed not to see a PC connection. When you have hooked up to one of these connections you will not be disappointed. Pioneer have improved the quality of the blacks using its unique Pure Black Crystal Emissive Layer. Which means that blacks on the screen are sharp and without blocking. The picture information is displayed beautifully at 1024 x 768 resolution. As with most of the new Plasma and LCD TV’s the sound quality lets down the improved picture quality. To remedy this we recommend that you look at adding something like the Yamaha YSP800.

The 436SXE’s connections, however, aren’t quite as impressive as those of its XDE sibling, as moving everything onto the TV has led to three dropouts. For starters we find just one HDMI jack versus the XDE models’ two. Also, there’s no sign of the XDE’s photo-card slot. And most annoyingly, unlike the XDE models there’s no way of attaching a PC. You can still attach an Xbox 360 for HD gaming via a set of component jacks, but we’re sure at least a few of our readers will find the lack of any PC interface pretty distressing.

Sky’s HDTV receivers will use HDMI to receive high-definition broadcasts and you can also watch upscaled images from a digitally compatible DVD player. Herein lies the problem — if you own both a set top box and DVD player with HDMI you’ll be forced to switch between a single input. The latest flat screens are arriving with dual HDMI inputs so its exclusion is surprising, as is the absence of a VGA PC input. Media centre owners and high-definition gamers will have to use an adaptor cable — another expense.
