The high-value Samsung PN50A550 proves you don’t have to pay top dollar to enjoy the lifelike detail, texture and depth that only full 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution can provide. This is plasma done right, with exceptional picture clarity, deep black levels, and superb color accuracy — skin tones look strikingly natural. The PN50A550 makes all of today’s HD sources look their very best, especially 1080p Blu-ray movies.
Enjoy high-definition both now and in the future
With this TV in your system, you can stop worrying about the coming analog signal shutoff in 2009. Like all new HDTVs, the PN50A550 receives both analog and digital over-the-air broadcasts (antenna required). Also, a “QAM” tuner allows cable TV subscribers to watch most unscrambled channels without using a set-top box — including local network HD channels in many areas.
Plenty of inputs for all your HD sources
This set’s future-ready connections include two HD-capable component video inputs and three HDMI inputs for hooking up high-def satellite receivers, Blu-ray players, video game consoles, and other components that use this all-digital connection. The HDMI connections feature Anynet+, which lets you control compatible Samsung components using only the TV’s remote. Even the PC input accepts 1080p signals, so you can feed high-def material from your computer and see it in full resolution. You can also take advantage of the USB input to watch a slideshow from your digital camera or thumb drive.

When choosing an HDTV there are quite a few things to consider before buying. Some of the biggest things to look at are image quality, and cost. The Samsung PN50A550 scores well in both areas. It is also important to look at the brand and its history. Samsung has been a very respect TV maker for many years and is one of the best in my opinion, so that definitely gives more to this television.

Samsung have noted one difference being the Series 5 (PN-A550) plasmas employment of a single scan system; matching what LG has previously introduced in their plasma displays. A single scan system uses a single driving board/integrated chip to drive the whole plasma display panel rather than the more common twin or multiple driver arrangement. Single scan is way to gain quicker refresh rates for high resolutions.

The PN50A550 is designed classicaly and looks very much like any other Samsung HDTVs. The PN50A550’s main difference is that it is a bit taller and narrower due to its built-in hidden speakers mounted along the bottom of the panel as opposed to the sides. The frame is entirely gloss-black, about average thickness for a plasma, and there’s a blue accent light below the Samsung logo.

It’s the PN50A550’s Color Space control that really sets this display apart. It offers three settings: Auto, Native, and Custom. The Auto setting responds to the needs of the program material. The color-space standard is slightly different for high-def and standard-def content. The Native color space is wider than the standard, and Custom lets you dial in the set’s color points as tightly as your patience and test gear will allow. These include the yellow, cyan, and magenta secondaries as well as the red, green, and blue primaries. We’ve seen other displays that offer a way to shift the color points, but none of them has been as slick to use or as effective as this one.

The A550’s gloss-black cabinet is a cut or two above the norm. The bezel is a single molded piece with no visible seams other than a narrow opening that runs along the entire bottom edge of the bezel. When the set is on, a blue LED hidden inside the center of the speaker opening creates a softly glowing strip a few inches wide; this can be turned off if you find it distracting. The front-panel controls are located on the right side of the bezel face near the bottom, and the flush-mounted switches require only the lightest of taps to operate.
